Specific entry requirements

The courses in the program should be taken in the order stated in the programme curriculum. For admission to semester 6, students are allowed to have the course Health, Society and Environment, 7.5 credits, semester 5 outstanding. Other courses should be passed.

Objectives

Introduction
The course contributes to an advancement of earlier acquired knowledge in the occupational therapy programme. The course mainly focuses on teaching, supervision, leadership styles and diversity issues in organisations. Furthermore, knowledge of organisational forms and policy documents concerning employee/employers are included.

Overall aims
The student will acquire advanced knowledge and understanding of what leadership and supervision are, and how they are connected to the structure and governance of different organisations, also highlighted from a gender and ethnicity perspective.

Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should :
- have acquired knowledge in theories of different leadership styles and organisational forms
- be able to problematise and synthesise orally what leadership is, and how it is applied in different organisations.
- be able to apply supervisory theories as practical educational tools
- be able to individually carry out an evidence-based presentation.
- be able to evaluate the role of leader/supervisor in teamwork

Content

The course covers:
* Different theories and models of leadership with an emphasis on consultative leadership
* Occupational therapists' leadership in different organisations
* Methodology in supervision with a focus on practical supervision and the role as consultant
* Different tools for oral presentation
* Laws and regulations that govern activities considering
the individual and the leadership role
* Laws and social perceptions of gender and ethnicity
* Different policies and governance in organisations
* Development and quality improvement in organisations

Teaching methods

The teaching constitutes of lectures, study group work, active knowledge acquisition, seminars and an individual assignment. See the pedagogical platform of the study programme in occupational therapy on the programme web page.

Examination

The course includes two examinations:
- an individual rhetoric task. Grading scale: Pass with distinction/Pass/Fail
- a group assignment that is presented both orally and in writing. Grading scale: Pass/Fail

To pass the course, the grade pass is required in both examinations.

All examinations, seminars and laboratory sessions are compulsory. In case of absence, an agreement is made between the student and the responsible teacher concerning compensation of the absence. The examinations included in the course are conducted according to established assessment criteria.

Re-examination can be performed on 5 occasions at most. These are scheduled to the week prior to the start of the autumn semester, the week prior to the spring semester and the week after the end of the spring semester. Any changes are posted on the course web page.

The course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education. A course report with an analysis of the results of the course evaluation will be posted on the course web page on completion of the course evaluation.
