Pharmacology, 3 credits

Passed results of at least 45 higher education credits from The Optometry program semester 1 and 2.

After the course, the student should
1. have general knowledge of what a drug is, how drugs can be administered, what drugs do to the body, what the body does to drugs, and how drugs are metabolised and eliminated
2. have general knowledge of neurotransmission in the central and peripheral nervous system and how drugs can interact with this
3. have theoretical knowledge and certain practical experience of how certain drugs may influence the functions of the eye
4. have good theoretical knowledge on the treatment of glaucoma
5. have general knowledge of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, and knowledge how to treat inflammation and infection in the eye.

Lectures on general pharmacology, receptor pharmacology and neurotransmission, lectures on pharmacological treatment of allergies and infections, glaucoma. A theoretic laboratory session where the students explore the effects of various pharmaceuticals in the eyes and a group exercise with enhancing questions around lectures.

Plenary lectures, group exercise, laboratory session, examination.

The course is examined in the following way:
1) written exam, is graded U (Fail), G (Pass) or VG (Pass with distinction)
Re-examination may be oral.
b) attendance in compulsory parts according to schedule

The course is graded U, G or VG.
The grade G requires G on the written exam, as well as fulfillment of compulsory course elements.

Absence from or unfulfillment of compulsory course elements
The examiner decides whether, and if so how, absence from or unfulfillment of compulsory course elements can be made up for. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in or fulfilled compulsory course elements, or compensated for any absence/ failure to fulfill in accordance with instructions from the examiner. Absence from or unfulfillment of a compulsory course element may imply that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Possibility of exception from the course syllabus' regulations on examination
If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus' regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the course etc. Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and attitudes may not be changed, removed or reduced.

Course evaluation takes place according to KI's local guidelines. Students are informed of the results and any measures taken on the course website.
