Specific entry requirements

Passed results of at least 55 higher education credits from The Optometry program semester 1 and 2 and at least 45 higher education credits from semester 3 and 4.

Objectives

- Identify and list contact lens materials
- Describe design and manufacturing processes
- Describe maintenance, cleaning and handling of soft and stable lenses
- Analyse the needs of soft lenses, and be able to fit these
- Analyse the needs of stable lenses, and be able to fit these
- Apply the knowledge from other learning outcomes to carry out a complete alignment in a patient

Content

General contact lens knowledge including i. a. manufacturing processes for contact lenses, contact lens materials, contact lens optics, principles of contact lens fitting, patient examination and patient instruction.
- Special contact lens knowledge including i. a. contact lenses when treating eye diseases, complications in wearing contact lenses, contact lenses and microbiology, to build and run a contact lens clinic.

The course is divided in four parts:

1) Compulsory attendance – 3 higher education credits
Compulsory attendance comprises attendance at compulsory parts.

2) Theoretical understanding – 4.5 higher education credits
Comprises a theoretical understanding and application of the subject-specific contents of the course.

3) Written assignments – 3 higher education credits
Comprise the implementation and submission of tasks.

4) Clinical work – 4.5 higher education credits
Comprises clinical work with to fit contact lenses on patient.

10.5 HE credits lie under The Optometry programme's semester 5 and 4.5 hp during semester 6.

The course aims at providing knowledge of different contact lens types, indications and contraindications for wearing contact lenses, fitting contact lenses and different contact lens accessories. This knowledge should be the basis for being able to fit contact lenses as correction for various types of visual defects, give patient instructions and make follow-up checks after contact lens fittings

Teaching methods

The course comprises self-study, demonstrations, laboratory sessions, theoretical overviews (in the form of lectures, seminars, Case methods, practical exercises), study visits and written assignments. The students are given a possibility to train practical skills but must take a great responsibility themselves.

Examination

The examination comprises:

1) Compulsory attendance
2) Written/Oral test
3) Written assignments
4) Clinical work

In this part Compulsory attendance is required attendance at demonstrations, seminars, labs, external patients and placement (in case of absence, measures with course directors are discussed). The part is graded according to the scale Fail/Pass.

The part Theoretical understanding is examined through written/oral examinations. The part is graded according to the scale Fail/Pass/Pass with distinction. For admission to the examination in Theoretical understanding, is required that supplementation of the part Mandatory attendance, is completed.

The part Written assignments be examined by tasks being submitted and passed (see separate list of assignments). The part is graded according to the scale Fail/Pass.

The part Clinical work is examined with practical test in contact lens fitting, assessment and handling (see separate list for detailed description of the practical tests), and attendance at contact lens fittings on patient. The part is graded according to the scale Fail/Pass

The whole course is graded according to the scale Fail/Pass/Pass with distinction. For a Pass grade in the course, a Pass grade is required for all its parts. For a Pass with distinction, a Pass grade in parts 1, 3 and 4, and a Pass with distinction in part 2, are required. Criteria for assessing the practical tests of the course are established in separate documents.

Student som ej är godkänd efter ordinarie examinationstillfälle har rätt att delta vid ytterligare fem examinationstillfällen. Om studenten genomfört sex underkända tentamina/prov ges inte något ytterligare texaminationstillfälle. Som examinationstillfälle räknas de gånger studenten deltagit i ett och samma prov. Inlämning av blank skrivning räknas som examinationstillfälle. Examinationstillfälle till vilket studenten anmält sig men inte deltagit räknas inte som examinationstillfälle.

Transitional provisions

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, students who have not completed the course are given the possibility, during four semesters from the date when the student first registered in the course, to be examined under the then current syllabus After four semesters, the student is examined under the new syllabus.

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
