Specific entry requirements
Passed results of at least 55 higher education credits from The Optometry program semester 1 and 2 and at least 45 higher education credits from semester 3 and 4.
Objectives
After the course, the student should be able to:
1) Identify and list contact lens materials
2) Describe design and manufacturing processes
3) Describe maintenance, cleaning and handling of soft and rigid lenses
4) Analyse the needs for soft lenses, and be able to fit these
5) Analyse the needs for rigid lenses, and be able to fit these
6) Apply the knowledge from the above mentioned aims in order to a external patient with lenses according to his/her needs.
And that the student in relation to general science and science based medicine, should be able to show:

8) good knowledge of the academic basis of the field and knowledge of current research and development and knowledge of the relationship between scholarship and best practice,
9) large ability to identify his needs of additional knowledge and to continuous develop his skills

Content
The course intends to give knowledge of different contact lens types, indications or contraindications for wearing contact lenses, fitting of contact lenses and different contact lens accessories. This knowledge should the basis for being able to fit contact lenses for
various types of ametropias, give patient instructions and do after-care.
The course includes general contact lens science including e.g. manufacturing processes for contact lenses, contact lens materials, contact lens optics, principles of contact lens fitting, patient examination and patient instructions. Furthermore, the course also include special contact lens topics, e.g., contact lenses when treating eye diseases, complications from wearing contact lenses, contact lenses and microbiology, knowledge to set-up and run a contact lens clinic.
And that the student in relation to general science and science based medicine and optometry, should be able to show: - how he/she can to continue to specialize within the are of contact lenses based on scientific knowledge and to communicate in a scientific manner. The student will also develop his knowledge and understanding, his skills and abilities his judgement and scientific thought and attitudes in relation to optometry and lifelong learning. The teaching related to general science and scientific abilities is described in a separate document.
The course is divided into three (3) parts.
with 10.5 credits during semester 5, and 4.5 credits during semester 6.
Clinical work, 6.0 hp
Part 1 includes implemented and submission of tasks and attendance at compulsory clinical work.
Theoretical understanding, 4.5 hp
Part 2 includes theoretical understanding.
Clinic, 4.5 hp
Part 3 includes clinical work of fitting contact lenses.
Teaching methods
The course comprises self-study, demonstrations, laboratory sessions, theoretical overviews (in the form of lectures, seminars, Case methods, practical exercises), study visits and written assignments. The students are given a possibility to train practical skills but must take a great responsibility themselves.
Examination
The course is examined against the following aims and in the following ways:
Part 1, Clinical work, examine all aims. Compulsory participation applies at
demonstrations, seminars, labs, external patients and clinical placement (in case of absence measures to re-do should be discussed
with the course director). The part is examined by tasks being submitted and
passed (see separate list of assignments). The part is graded according to the scale
Failed/passed.
Part 2, Theoretical understanding, examine all aims. Examined with Written/Oral
examination. The part is graded according to the scale Failed/Passed/pass with credit. For admission
to the examination in Theoretical understanding it is required that supplementary qualification for the part Clinical Work
is carried out.
Part 3, Clinic, examine aim 1-6. Examined by practical test in
contact lens fitting, assessment and handling (see separate list for
detailed description of the practical tests), and attendance at contact lens fittings.
The part is graded according to the scale Failed/Passed.
The overall course mark is graded according to the scale Failed/Passed/pass with credit. To obtain the mark Passed one must obtain Passed in
all parts. To pass with distinction it is required to get the mark Passed in part 1 and 3, and pass with credit in part 2.
Criteria for assessing the practical tests of the course are
established in separate documents.
Student that do not passed the first examination are given five more chances to be examined.
If the student has carried out six failed examinations/tests no further chances will be offered.
Transitional provisions
The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the fall semester of 2013. Last examination according to this syllabus will be provided the fall semester of 2021 for students who have not completed the course.

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
