Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for the most common pathogenic microorganisms in the care and infection spreading
- explain underlying prevention and causes i.e. aetiology and genesis mechanisms to diseases
- describe basic lesions and how they influence the body function i.e. pathophysiology, in commonly occurring diseases in acute or chronic form and the symptoms for respective disease
- based on the clinical picture give examples of diagnostic methods and treatments
- account for laboratory analyses that can be related to future professional work

Content

Based on the scientific evidence, you will study disorders in which the emphasis will be on diseases that can be diagnosed in a radiological clinic or that are important for the treatment of the patient in connection with radiological examination Within the course, you will study  common diseases in muscular skeletal system, digestive system, urinary system, nervous system and in lungs, heart and blood vessels. In addition, diabetes, neoplasms, infectious diseases, blood infections, endocrine diseases, children´s diseases and psychiatric diseases are studied.

Teaching methods

Teaching is given through lectures, written assignments and seminars.

The course includes mandatory presentations and seminars.
Course coordinator assesses whether and if so how absence from compulsory education elements might be assessed. Before the student participated in the mandatory sessions according to instructions the final study results cannot be reported.
The absence of a mandatory training component could mean that the student cannot make up for the time until the next time the course is offered.

Examination

The course is examined through written individual examination. For a passing the course, passed study assignment are required.

Students who are not approved for regular examination has the right to participate in five examinations. Within the course three occasions will be given. One within the course, one during the following re-examination. The third opportunity is provided before start of the next semester, or in close connection to that. In certain cases, it is required that the student submits an exemption application before he/she get the results of his/her latest completed examination. Three more opportunities will be provided as described above when the course is run next time.

If the student has six examinations, no additional examination will be given. Each participating in one examination date counts as one occasion.. Submission of blank exam counts as examination. Examination for which the student registered but not participating are not counted as examination.

Transitional provisions

The student may be examined according to a previous syllabus within a year after the date when a close-down or major changes of the course was decided.

Other directives

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education at Karolinska Institutet.
