Specific entry requirements

General admission requirements.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe some global public health problem
  • explain underlying prevention and causes i.e. aetiology and genesis mechanisms to diseases based on scientific grounds
  • describe basic pathological conditions and how they influence the body function i.e. pathophysiology, in commonly occurring acute or chronic diseases  and the symptoms for these disease
  • based on the clinical picture give examples of diagnostic methods and treatments based on evidence
  • account for laboratory analyses that can be related to future professional work

Content

The course starts with a global health perspective, where students are given the opportunity to discuss global health perspective. Based on the scientific evidence pathological condition is studied and the emphasis will be on diseases that can be diagnosed by a radiological clinic and diseases affecting the adult individual or are relevant to the care of the patient in conjunction with radiological examination, which may include psychiatric disorders. Pathological conditions in children that is common in a radiological department will also be discussed during the course. Within this course, musculoskeletal diseases, digestive system, urinary system, nervous system as well as the lungs, heart and blood vessels will be studied. Therewith studies about tumor diseases, endocrine diseases such as diabetes and pathological conditions of the thyroid will be included. The student is trained in analyzing patient condition from patient history containing symptoms, risk factors, and laboratory tests. Based on the analysis diagnostic methods and treatment are discussed.

Teaching methods

Teaching is given through lectures, assignments and seminars.

Course coordinator assesses whether and if so how absence from compulsory education elements might be assessed. Before the student participated in the mandatory sessions according to instructions the final study results cannot be reported.
 

Examination

The course is examined through written individual examination. To pass the course, students must pass the mandatory elements such as study assignments and seminars.

Students who are not approved for regular examination has the right to participate in five examinations. Within the course three occasions will be given. One within the course, one during the following re-examination. The third opportunity is provided before start of the next semester, or in close connection to that. In certain cases, it is required that the student submits an exemption application before he/she get the results of his/her latest completed examination. Three more opportunities will be provided as described above when the course is run next time.

If the student has six examinations, no additional examination will be given. Each participating in one examination date counts as one occasion. Submission of blank exam counts as examination. Examination for which the student registered but not participating are not counted as examination.

Transitional provisions

The student may be examined according to a previous syllabus within a year after the date when a close-down or major changes of the course was decided.

Other directives

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education at Karolinska Institutet.
