Specific entry requirements

For admission to the course, it is required that at least 20 credits from semester 3 are passed.

Objectives

Module 1
Dental prophylaxis, specialisation 2.5 credits
On completion of the course, the student can:

  • From a scientific basis be able to account for risk factors concerning periodontal disease and explain the connection between general diseases and oral health and the importance of oral health for the general well-being.
  • Discuss and observe ethical aspects in a treatment situation and relate to a social perspective.
  • Explain and understand the importance of interprofessional learning with other professions within the care sector and identify the role of the dental hygienist.
  • Explain and understand the theories of implementation of tobacco prevention and tobacco cessation and its importance for the oral- and general health.
  • Account for the normal or the ill aging- biological, physical, psychological and social- and reflect on the dental consequences of this.
  • From an overall view make assessments for the individual patient's need with dental anxiety and observe ethical and social aspects.

Module 2 Health communication 1.5 credits

  • Account for communication techniques for the behavioural influence in order to promote the oral health and the general well-being.

Content

The course contains two modules.

Odontological Prophylaxis, 2.5 hp

Grading scale: VU

The module contains odontological prophylaxis with an emphasis on:

  • Risk factors for periodontal disease and connection to general diseases
  • Interprofessional cooperation
  • Tobacco prevention and tobacco cessation
  • Normal and ill aging
  • Dental anxiety

Health Communication, 1.5 hp

Grading scale: VU

The module contains:

  • Theories of communication techniques

Teaching methods

The tuition forms during the course is lectures, seminars and group work. The course comprises full-time studies.

Seminars and group work compulsory.

The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Examination

Module 1
Odontolgical prophylaxis, specialisation
The assessment of the students'achievements and knowledge take place through written examination, individual written assignment and through oral presentation in seminars.

Module 2
Health communication
The assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge take place through written examination.

To pass the course, attendance at compulsory course elements is also required.

Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.

Transitional provisions

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the spring semester of 2017. Examination will be provided until the autumn of 2019 for students who have not completed the course.

Other directives

The course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
