Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Carry out clinical examinations of periodontal and cariologic conditions based on scientific methodology.
  • Register clinical findings in the medical record that constitutes the basis for diagnostics and treatment planning.
  • Give basic information about the disease progression at gingival inflammation, periodontitis as well as about the caries process.
  • Initiate and carry out health promotion work in the form of individual oral hygiene instructions and professional oral hygiene treatment.
  • Respond to the patient in an empathetic way as well as see the individual from a holistic perspective.
  • Apply current routines regarding hygiene and disease control.

Content

The course introduces the student to dental prophylaxis with a specialisation in clinical cariology and periodontology. The course starts with a compulsory practical clinical hygiene exercise so that the student obtains knowledge and an understanding of the importance of preventing and avoiding disease transmission. The main content of the course consists of clinical registrations, diagnostics and treatment planning as well as an introduction to the dental health care process. The course focuses on the importance of oral hygiene for preserving healthy conditions in the mouth as well the prevention of caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. Emphasis is placed on the section about hygiene and disease control and the establishment of correct medical records.

The course deals with the following:

  • Clinical registrations, diagnostics and treatment planning.
  • Introduction to the dental care process.
  • The importance of oral hygiene for preserving healthy conditions in the mouth as well the prevention of caries, gingivitis and periodontitis.
  • Hygiene and disease control.
  • Establishment of medical records.
  • Patient communication with a focus on health promotive patient education.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, demonstrations, independent studying, pair and group work as well as clinical observation at the Public Dental Service. The teaching implies that the students carry out clinical examinations in pairs and and professional oral hygiene treatment on one another.

Compulsory attendance and participation during demonstrations, seminars as well as pair and group work at the clinic. The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Examination

Assessment of the student's achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place continuously during the course as well as through a presentation of clinical skills at a clinical examination.

To pass the course, attendance at compulsory course elements is also required.

Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.

The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (VFU) or the equivalent if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity.

In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course.

Transitional provisions

If the course is discontinued or undergoes major changes, examination with the previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered for no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/discontinuation.

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the autumn semester of 2016. Examination will be provided until the autumn of 2017 for students who have not completed the course.

Other directives

Course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education.
