Specific entry requirements

120 credits in medicine, technique, science or care.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should
- understand the role and preconditions of the science journalism
- have insight in the working method of various media e.g. newspapers, special journals, radio, TV and web
- have acquired an understanding of the basics of journalistic communication
- have improved his own writing ability with a focus on formulation and layout - have obtained an insight into editorial work and, maybe, published something in a popular science forum.

Content

The course is, apart from lectures by leading science reporters, structured around written exercises with individual feedback from science reporters and an editorial post. The editorial post is carried out in cooperation with a supervisor with major experience and skills in medical/scientific journalism.

Teaching methods

Student-activating planning. Mainly project-based where the lectures aim at providing an overview and an introduction. Three major written exercises take place during the course. Furthermore 10 days of an editorial post.

Examination

Written exercises and oral reporting of the editorial post.

Compulsory parts:
- Written exercises, I) News item, II) Article and III) News item directed towards children.
- Editorial post with written and oral presentation.
- Lectures: Popular science, Business and pleasure, Interview technique, To write an article, Rhetorics, Presentation techniques, Can you write what you want in the newspaper.
- Visits at Sveriges Radio.
- Reporting of editorial posts.
In case of a failed part, there is a possibility to make up with a project work.

Transitional provisions

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the spring 2012. Examination will be provided until the fall semester of 2015 for students who have not completed the course.
