Objectives

The general aim of the course is that the student should achieve competence to independently be able to perform health care and nursing in child and school health services. The course contains three parts. Part 1 - Health and living conditions for children and adolescents, 6 HE credits Health and living conditions for children and adolescents, 6 HE credits On completion of this part, the student should: - Be able to explain and interpret relationships between living conditions, environment and health, nationally and internationally, and be able to interpret and apply epidemiological concepts. - Identify and evaluate risk/health factors, risk/vulnerable groups related to common health problems in children and adolescents. - Be able to understand and reflect on theories and methods about parenthood, parental support and the early the interaction between children and parents. - Be able to evaluate different actions and support to children, adolescents and families with special needs on the basis of the responsibility and resources of the society and argue for the rights of children according to the Convention of the Rights of the Child. - Explain and interpret physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development of children and adolescents based on different development theories. - Be able to problematise and analyse relations between living habits/life style and health, and evaluate pedagogical theories and methods relevant to health promotion and preventive work on the basis of an evidence-based thinking. - Be able to describe and assess nursing needs in children, adolescents and their families within child and school health care, and reflect on an ethical approach based on the age, cultural identity and individuality of the child. - Be able to assess breast feeding, diet and eating habits in children and adolescents based on nutritional contents and health aspects both nationally and internationally. Part 2 - Essentials of Pediatrics, 3 HE credits Essentials of Pediatrics, 3 HE credits On completion of this part, the student should: - Be able to account for and assess different injuries and disease that are commonly occurring in child and school health care. - Be able to account for underlying diseases related to the vaccination programme within the child and school health care and be able to argue for high vaccination coverage. - Be able to account for and evaluate the needs of nutrition and energy of children and adolescents in different ages. Part 3 - Clinical training in Child and School Health Services, 6 HE credits Clinical training in Child and School Health services, 6 HE credits On completion of this part, the student should: - Be able to independently plan, carry out, evaluate and document health care at individual, group, and school levels. - Be able to carry out medical assessment and prescription of vaccinations according to the vaccination programme within the child and school health care and independently be responsible that the vaccination programme is carried out in a way that is pedagogical and safe for the child. - Be able to critically evaluate national and international nursing research, quality development and how evidence-based methods are applied in child and school health care. - Be able to account for and reflect on the organisation of the child and school health care, its leadership and cooperation with close areas of activity, and interpret and apply current legislation and regulations.

Teaching methods

The course is conducted both as campus-based education (full-time) and as distance education (half-speed). The course is based on a problem-oriented and student-activating approach to learning. Placement is included. The campus education includes different pedagogical working methods such as seminars, lectures, individual work and work in groups. The distance education is IT-based and is characterised by independent and collaborative learning. Different working methods such as individual study assignments, work in groups, virtual discussions and seminars and lectures are used. The number of physical hits is limited to at most 2 days/7.5 credits. During the placement, supervision and reflection are included individually and/or in a group.

Examination

Part 1 - Health and living conditions - Individual written examination (Distance education) - Oral examination (Campus education) Part 2 - Essentials of Pediatrics - Individual written examination Part 3 - Clinical training in Child and School Health services - Clinical examinations in child health and school health services, respectively. The compulsory parts of the course are indicated in the timetable or in the study guide. In case of absence from compulsory parts, turn to the course director. Study assignments should be completed for participation in examinations. For Pass with distinction in the entire course, a Pass with distinction in two of three subparts is required. A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination sessions per examination. The placement included in the course is compulsory (32 h/1.5 HE credits), 3 HE credits in child health care and 3 HE credits in school health care. During the clinical training, continuous assessment of the students' achievements takes place. The student receives a certificate after the clinical training. The student has the right to do clinical training at most two times.

Transitional provisions

If a student has not accomplished a course, the student has the possibility to be examined according to the previous syllabus and the reading list, up to two years after the change of the syllabus and the reading list.

Course evaluation takes place in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
