Objectives

The aim of the course is that the student, on completion of the course, should have achieved skills to independently and professionally be able to take responsibility for, carry out and develop health and nursing work within community health service. The student should in this work be able to evaluate and apply nursing research and evidence-based methods critically. Community health service is understood to include also child health care and school health service. The course consists of two parts: 1. Health for children and adolescents, 10.5 HE credits Health for children and adolescents 2. Health for adults and elderly/home health care, 12 HE credits Health for adults and elderly/home health care Part 1: Health for children and adolescents, 10.5 HE credits Health for children and adolescents On completion of this part, the student should be able to: - understand and reflect on parenthood, the interaction and relations between children and parents, and to be able to evaluate different methods for parental support, both individually and in groups - explain and assess growth and physical, motor, cognitive and the socio-emotional development of children and adolescents based on different development theories - assess breast feeding, diet and eating habits among children and adolescents based on nutritional contents and health aspects - teach and communicate with children and adolescents and their family on the basis of pedagogical theories and independently be able to carry out health promotion and preventive work - explain and assess injuries, diseases and health problems that are commonly occurring among children and adolescents considering gender and culture - independently assess nursing needs, and plan, carry out and evaluate nursing and evaluate actions and support to children, adolescents and families on the basis of the responsibility of the society, resources, and the intentions of the child convention and an ethical approach - independently carry out medical assessment and prescription of drugs for vaccinations within established vaccination programmes Part 2: Health for adults and elderly/home health care, 12 HE credits Health for adults and elderly/home health care On completion of this part, the student should be able to: - respond to and communicate with patients and family, and in consultation analyse and assess nursing needs and plan, carry out and evaluate nursing, and reflect on the meaning of a professional approach in community health service - problematise and reflect on the importance of the home for health and care and as a working environment, and be responsible for coordinating and carrying out nursing on the basis of an ethical attitude - explain and assess different medical conditions considering gender and culture, and reflect on the district nurse's nursing responsibility in connection with rehabilitation - independently assess and evaluate needs of, and be able to prescribe, consumables and assistive devices, considering the patient's integrity and safety, and prescribe according to current regulations - reflect on and be responsible for medical engineering equipment in the clinic and in home care service and that it is an aid to the patient's quality of life and safety - independently teach and supervise patients and family both individually and in groups and in different nursing situations and initiate, plan and carry out health promotion activities

Part 1. Health for children and adolescents The contents of this part are focused on health care, nursing and treatment of health problems among children and adolescents. - Parenthood/parental support - Development theories - Diet and breast feeding - Health promotion and preventive work among children, adolescents and families, - Vaccinations within established programs - Paediatrics - Nursing/documentation - Organisational Theory and Management in child and school health services - Laws, constitutions, children's convention Part 2. Health for adults and elderly/home health care The contents are focused on nursing, prevention and treatment in various health problems and medical conditions among adults and elderly in community health service. - Nursing at home including care at the end of life - The role of family - Food and nutrition - Hygiene and disease control - Prescription right of consumables and technical aids - Ethical and professional attitude - Patient education and communication - Organisation, cooperation and managements - Nursing documentation, laws, constitutions

Teaching methods

The course is conducted both as campus-based education (full-time) and distance education (half-speed) and the working methods are based on a problem-oriented and student-activating approach to learning. The campus education includes pedagogical working methods such as lectures, seminars, group assignment and individual work. The course also includes placement, paediatrics 3 HE credits, school health services 3 HE credits and community health service 7.5 HE credits. During the placement, supervision and reflection are included individually and/or in a group. The distance education is IT based and is based on individual and collaborative learning. Different working methods such as individual study assignments, work in groups, virtual discussions and seminars and lectures are used. The number of physical hits is limited to at most 2 days/7.5 HE credits.

Examination

Part 1 Health for children and adolescents Written individual examination Part 2 Health for adults and elderly Written individual examination Clinical examination in community health service Final examination of parts 1 and 2 takes place in an individual form at the end of the course. Study assignments and previous examinations should be completed before participation in the final examination. A Pass grade in the course, requires approved results of both the parts and the final examination of the course. A Pass with distinction requires a Pass with distinction in at least one part and in the final examination. A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination opportunities for each course. Examination times are announced at the beginning of the course. The placement included in the course is compulsory, and during the placement, a continuous assessment of the students' learning takes place. The student has the right to placement at most two times.
