Clinical rotation Ophthalmology, 6 credits

General requirements o A very good command of English, corresponding to 550 TOEFL scores, or a very good command of Swedish, corresponding to a pass in the TISUS-test. o Three years of study at a study programme in Medicine o Basic computer knowledge Specific requirements The student should have a basic knowledge of: physiological optics, common ophthalmological investigations like visual acuity testing and refraction and be able to perform biomicroscopy, ophthalmoscopy and an basic external examination of the eye.

The student shall after passing the course be able to: • aquire an anamnesis from the patient and perform a basic ophthalmological investigation. • handle adequately common ophthalmological conditions. • interpret the results from an ophthalmological investigation and thereby consider a preliminary diagnosis as well as adequate differentials, initiate a treatment and discuss the follow up of such patients.

Clinical rotation at out-patient clinics, ophthalmic surgery theatre and ophthalmic wards. The student can have the opportunity to take part in Emergency room training, general ophthalmology clinic, medical retina clinic, ophthalmic inpatient ward, ophthalmic surgery, pediatric ophthalmology clinic and glaucoma clinic. In addition to attending daily didactic conferences, the student will engage in clinical activities under the supervision of ophthalmology residents and consultants. The extent of participation in patient care is determined by the skill level, motivation and initiative of the student. Students will develop and refine skills in the use of the penlight, ophthalmoscope and slit lamp. Students will also have ample opportunity to observe a variety of ophthalmic surgical and laser procedures.

Mostly clinical work and auscultation at the different clinics at S:t Eriks Eye hospital. The student is required to study the course literature and to write log book/reports. Compulsory attendance When arriving to S:t Eriks Eye hospital the student get a detailed personal schedule for attendance and also a contact person at every clinic. The schedule can be changed according to the student´s interest but the contact persons at the involved clinics must always confirm any changes in the schedule. Any absence must be reported to the contact person and also to the course supervisor. The course supervisor also makes a decision about how to make up for the absence.

The student should present 5 written complete patients reports during the study period. These reports should be organized according to a template provided by the course supervisor.

A student’s work-based education may be ended immediately if the student demonstrates such a serious lack in terms of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patients’ confidence in medical care is jeopardised. If the work-based education is ended in this way, an individual action plan should be drawn up detailing the activities and knowledge checks required before the student may continue with work-based education. A student who has failed the work-based education due to such a serious lack in terms of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patients’ confidence in medical care is jeopardised is qualified to a new opportunity only when the individual action plan has been completed.
