Specific entry requirements

At least 3 years of studies in medicine.

Students who fail a clinical placement (or equivalent) as a result of demonstrating such a serious lack of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or the patients' confidence in medical care is at risk, will only be qualified for a new clinical placement once the individual action plan has been carried out.

Objectives

Aim
The aim of the course is that the student should acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes in ophthalmology.

Learning outcomes
The student should be able to:

  • take medical history and be able perform a basic ophthalmological status
  • at a general level suggest how to handle less common diseases and injuries
  • be able to interpret the results of medical history and examination, propose a diagnosis, consider differential diagnoses, make clinical decisions, and suggest initial treatment of common, acute and chronic ophthalmological diseases and injuries in adults
  • act respectfully towards patients, students, teachers and staff and take active responsibility for learning

Content

The topic-specific core of the course consists of the speciality ophthalmology. The main focus is on clinical practice in out patient clinics, wards and surgical departments with case-based teaching and individual feedback, to facilitate further development of skills.
The student will be assigned a personal schedule for the clinical rotation.

Teaching methods

Primarily work-based education, with personal supervision. Depending on their experience and knowledge, students can, to a varying degree, be given the possibility to actively take part in the work performed. Students are required to fill in a log-book with personal reflections as well as searching and evaluating relevant scientific articles following the principles of evidence-based medicine.

Teaching will be performed in English. Students are scheduled 40 hours per week, during which time is allocated for literature studies.
Teaching in evenings and at night may occur.

Examination

Compulsory elements:
Clinical rotation
Formative assessment of log book by supervisor every week.

Examination:
Written examination in the form of 5 case reports according to established model.

Absence of leave must be reported to the contact and to the student's supervisor.
The course coordinator decides if, and how, absence from compulsory parts can be compensated.
Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator.

Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus's regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the course etc.   Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.

Limitation of number test or practical training sessions
Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions.
If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given.
Regarding clinical rotations, the student has the right to attend these two (2) times.

Termination of clinical rotation
The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk.
If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity.

In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course.

Transitional provisions

If a course has been cancelled or has undergone major changes, at least two additional examinations (excluding regular examinations) on the previous contents will be provided within a year of the date of the change.

Other directives

Course evaluation is implemented according to guidelines established by the Committee for Higher Education and the medical programme at Karolinska Institutet.
