Nursing in Intensive Care 1, 15 credits

Qualification as a nurse certified by the National Board of Health and Welfare

Based on the central concepts of nursing, person, nursing, health and environment the course objectives are : to be able to carry out a person-centered care within intensive care i.e. protect autonomy, security and integrity of patients and their families. In addition, the objectives are to deepen knowledge and skills in nursing care and medical treatment to patients within intensive care.

Learning outcomes

Part 1 Nursing within intensive care
• Be able to describe nursing needs for a patient deteriorating in vital functions and explain the relationship between nursing needs, nursing care, medical care and treatment.
• With an ethical and socio-cultural perspective be able to apply a person-centered nursing care to protect autonomy, security and integrity of patients and their family.
• Basis on current research be able to analyse and argue for commonly occurring nursing needs and nursing care within intensive care and post-operative care.
• Describe function and safe application of medical devices in the area.
• Explain the significance of the impact of intensive care environments' external and internal factors on patients'/family's well-being based on the central concepts: person, health, nursing and environment.

Part 2 Clinical education
• Under supervision assess an intensive care/post-operative care patients' vital functions, nursing need,conduct and evaluate nursing care.
• Independently evaluate and apply hygienic and aseptic technique for safe nursing care in the intensive care unit/post-operative unit.
• Cooperate and communicate in the team with a professional approach to increase safety for the patient in the health care.
• Be able to calculate, prepare and administrate drugs correctly and in relation to current laws and regulations.

Part 1 Nursing within intensive care
• Assessment, nursing interventions and treatment of patient with deterioration in vital functions in one or several organs: sepsis, SIRS, MODS, DIC, coagulopathies
• Medical technology and patient security
• General and regional anaesthesia and perioperative nursing
• Laws and regulations in relation to nursing care and treatment
• Person-centered nursing care from ethical and socio-cultural needs: integrity, autonomy and security
• Creating open airway, ventilator and material knowledge

• Fluid balance and nutrition

Part 2 Clinical education
• Structured patient assessment
• Monitoring and nursing care of patient with deterioration in vital functions
• Handling of drugs
• Hygiene and aseptic technique in intensive care
• Communication and interaction with patient, relative and other co-workers

Working methods aim to train a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical analysis and reflection. In this course, lectures, seminars, group assignments, individual study assignments, literature studies, skills training, simulation and clinical education occur. Participation in seminars, group assignments, individual study assignments, skills training, simulation and clinical education are compulsory. Since the course is web-based seminars and group assignments can also be carried out virtual in real time or asynchronous (the discussion goes on over a long period of time). In case of absence from compulsory parts, compensation in consultation with course coordinator takes place.

The education is web-based and is carried out full-time equivalent 40 hours a week. In each module about 7.5 HE credits, approximately 3-4 compulsory meetings are included on KI Campus Huddinge. As often as possible, these days are placed together Other time studies is carried out via a digital learning system with written assignments, examinations, virtual discussions etc It is required that you have basic computer science skills and access to computer with Internet connection. Clinical education is included in several of the courses of the education. The clinical education can be carried out outside Stockholm county council by agreement between involved parties.

The clinical education includes 40 hours/week (full-time studies) of which 32 hours/week is located to an intensive care unit. Day -, evening - and night shifts occur. Student have no right to compress the clinical education.

Part 1 is examined individually through oral and written examinations based on patient case.

Part 2
Half-time - and final assessment is carried out. Clinical supervisors and/or adjunct clinical lecturer provides a base for evaluation according to a predetermined assessment form for clinical education. With risk for failure shall, not later than at the half-time assessment, responsible university teacher together with the clinical supervisors and the student set up a written planning for the continued clinical education. Drug dosage is examined through a written examination that requires 100% to pass.

The examiner can with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical education (VFU), or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When clinical education is interrupted according to this, it implies that the student fails in the current part, and that one clinical rotation opportunity is used up.

In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up for required activities and examinations, before the student is given a possibility for a new clinical education in the course.

For a Pass grade in the course, it is required that the expected learning outcomes are satisfied which implies passed results in part 1 and 2 and active participation in compulsory parts. To pass with distinction in the course it is required that at least one of the graded parts in part 1 is passed with distinction and that part 2 is passed with distinction. Grades are assigned by examiner.

Times for examinations are announced at the beginning of the course.

Too late submitted examination assignments will not be considered. Students who not have delivered in time, is referred to the re-examination that should be given two – six weeks according to KI's guidelines after the examination result on the first examination has been distributed.

Limitation of the number of examination occasions:
For all examinations student is entitled to participate in a total of six examinations. Students without approved results after three examinations may be offered to retake parts or course once more. Failed clinical education may be done once more time.

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the spring semester of 2012. The course has been replaced with another, and examination will be provided according to the guidelines in the syllabus for 2IN009.
