Specific entry requirements
For admission to semester 2, the student may remain a maximum of 15 credits from semester 1.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for and use relevant terminology, relevant tools and aids within the area
- transcribe vowels, consonants and certain prosodic phenomena
- consistent transcribe conversational interaction according to prevalent orthographic models
Content
The course gives a practical orientation where the student practices his/her ability to handle relevant tools for transcription of verbal communication from authentic recordings. The course focuses on phonetic and phonemic transcription according to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Prosodic transcription and orthographic transcription of conversational interactions are also included.
The course may be given in English.
Teaching methods
The teaching is given in the form of lectures and group exercises.
Examination
The examination consists of individually written assignments.
For students who have not passed the regular examination, possibility for re-examination is offered at a total of six examinations. As examination sessions, the times that the student participated in the same test are counted. Supplementary qualification of a written assignment is counted as an examination.
Transitional provisions
Examination can be given according to an earlier literature list during a time of one year after the date when a renewal of the literature list has been made. Examination will be provided during a time of two years after a possible termination of the course.
Other directives
The course, as a whole, is given at the Department of Linguistics, Stockholm University.
The course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines that are established by the Board of education.
