Specific entry requirements
For admission to semester 2, the student may remain a maximum of 15 credits from semester 1.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for and use relevant terminology, relevant tools and methods in the area
- transcribe vowels, consonants and certain prosodic phenomena
Content
The course discusses phonetic and phonemic transcription of vowels, consonants and prosodic phenomena according to IPA's transcription system. The course gives a practical orientation where the student practices his/her ability to handle relevant tools for transcription of verbal communication from authentic recordings.
The course may be given in English.
Teaching methods
The teaching is given in the form of lectures, group work and a final review. All teaching activities except lectures are compulsory unless there is other information in the schedule.
In case of absence from a compulsory teaching activity, the student is responsible for contacting the course coordinator for complementary assignment. Course coordinator decides, how absence from compulsory teaching activity can be made up for. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory lecture may result in that the student can not make up for the teaching activity until next time the course be given.
Examination
The examination consists of an individual written assignment.
Transitional provisions
Examination can be carried out according to an earlier literature list during a period of one year after the date when a renewal of the literature list was made. Examination will be provided during a time of two years after a possible discontinuation of the course.
Other directives
The course, as a whole, is given at the Department of Linguistics, Stockholm University.
The course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines that are established by the Board of Education.
