Introduction to Dentistry, 6 credits

On completion of the course, the student should

• be familiar with the contents of future undergraduate studies
• have an understanding of the dentist's area of expertise, work situation and possibilities for professional development
• be informed about the organisation and structure of the Swedish dental care, laws and regulations and current insurance systems
• be able to account on a general level for the body organ systems in an independent and general manner
• be able to account for dental and occlusal development, the structure of the tooth, the difference between primary and permanent teeth and their most common morphological element
• be able to identify normal occlusion and with a correct nomenclature be able to diagnose the most common malocclusions
• be able to identify and account for the function and maintenance of the most common instruments/tools in dental care and be able to prevent disease transmission

The course is divided into three parts:
Part 1.
The normal development of the bite, and the anatomy of the body 4.5 HE credits (Anatomy of the teeth and of the body)
This part starts with an introduction around the anatomy of the body. Furthermore, the part includes dental anatomy and the normal development of the bite.

Part 2. Dentistry in Sweden, oral diseases and current research areas 1 HE credit (Dentistry in Sweden, oral diseases and current research areas)
The part gives an overview of the organisation and structure of the Swedish dental care, laws and regulations and the current reimbursement system.
A general presentation is given of the common oral diseases, and information about current research in the area, and a historical perspective.

Part 3
The dental office 0.5 HE credits (The dental office)
The part gives a general orientation in the structure of a dental clinic, instruments, equipment, management and maintenance.

The normal development of the bite, and the anatomy of the body 4.5 HE credits (Anatomy of the teeth and of the body)

This part starts with an introduction around the anatomy of the body. Furthermore, the part includes dental anatomy and the normal development of the bite.

The part gives a general orientation in the structure of a dental clinic, instruments, equipment, management and maintenance.

The course comprises lectures, seminars, demonstrations, literature studies, study visit and practical exercises.
Attendance is required at seminars, demonstrations, study visits and practical exercises.

The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Examination is arranged through oral and/or written examination.

To pass the course, the results of the parts should be approved.

Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions
If the student's examination has not passed, the student gets 2 more examination opportunities. After that, the student is recommended to retake the course and is given 3 more examination opportunities. If the student has not passed after 6 trials, he/she has no more admission to the course. (HF chapter 6, section 11 a).

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/close-down.

A course evaluation is carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of education.
