Specific entry requirements
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe the obligations and rights that apply to the studies in the program
- account for the dental practitioner's area of activity, work situation and professional development opportunities
- describe the organisation and structure of the Swedish dental care, laws and regulations as well as current insurance system.
- describe the concept of sustainable development and the environmental impact of the dental care
- account in general for the organ system of the body
- in a general way account for tooth and occlusal development, the structure of the tooth, the difference between primary and permanent teeth as well as their most common morphological features
- identify normal occlusion as well as with a correct nomenclature diagnose the most common malocclusions
- identify and account for function and maintenance of the most common instruments/the tools in the dental care as well as be able to follow hygiene procedures.
Content
The course gives an introduction to the studies and the future profession and is divided into three modules:
Anatomy of the teeth and of the body, 4.5 hp
This module starts with an introduction of the anatomy of the body. Furthermore, the module includes dental anatomy and the normal development of the bite.
Dentistry in Sweden and oral diseases, 1.0 hp
In this module, an overview of the organisation and structure of the Swedish dental care, laws and regulations are given as well as current reimbursement system.
A general presentation is given of the common oral diseases, and information about current research in the area, and a historical perspective. The module also includes information about student law, cheating and study technique as well as the dental practitioner's area of activity, work situation and professional development opportunities. Furthermore, sustainable development and the environment in relation to dental care, is addressed.
The dental office, 0.5 hp
In this module, a general orientation of the structure, instrument, equipment, management and maintenance of a dental clinic is given.
Teaching methods
The course comprises lectures, seminars, demonstrations, literature studies, study visit and practical exercises.
Attendance is required at seminars, demonstrations, study visits and practical exercises.
The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.
Examination
Examination is arranged through oral examination and written assignment.
To pass the course, attendence at compulsory parts is also necessary.
Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions
Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.
Transitional provisions
The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the autumn semester of 2018. Examination will be provided until the autumn of 2019 for students who have not completed the course.
Other directives
A course evaluation is carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of education.
