Dental toxicology. Adverse reactions to dental biomaterials, 1.5 credits

For admission to the course, passed results in the course Clinical dentistry 3 are required.

On completion of the course, the student should:

• Independently be able to acquire documentation of dental materials.
• Have knowledge of the most important occupational hygienic aspects of dental care activity.
• Be able to account for potential risks of toxic and allergic reactions that may be associated with the use of different dental materials for both patients and dental care personnel.
• Have knowledge of how patients with suspected adverse drug reactions to dental materials should be examined and how side effects and incidents are reported.

The knowledge situation is highlighted through lectures and is deepened in connection with presentation of patient cases and literature assignments at seminars.
Lectures on:

• Adverse drug reactions from dental materials,
• The Amalgam issue and toxicological aspects on mercury,
• Patient investigation at suspicion about adverse drug reactions,
• Allergies and the skin problems of dental care personnel and patients
• Toxicological aspects on current subjects in the area such as fluoride, bisfenol A and nanoparticles
• Environmental aspects on dental care

- Lectures and teacher-supervised seminars
- Studies of literature
- Preparations of patient case
- Seminar presentation

All seminars are compulsory.

The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Presentation of advanced assignment in the form of patient cases and literature assignments and oral examination of included areas of lectures.

A Pass grade also requires attendance at compulsory course elements.

If the student does not pass the examination, the student gets 2 more attempts. After that, the student is recommended to retake the course and is given 3 more examination opportunities. If the student has not passed after 6 trials, he/she has no more admission to the course. (HF chapter 6, section 11§a).

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/close-down.

A course evaluation is carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of education.
