Objectives

The general aims of the course are that the student should achieve the competence in gerontology and geriatrics that is required to independently plan, carry out and evaluate nursing actions as a specialist nurse in the care of elderly. On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - demonstrate advanced knowledge of biological, psychological, cultural, social and mental aspects of aging - reflect and see relations between the health of the elderly population, unhealth and conditions in society from a gender as well as national and international perspective - analyse and reflect on different theories about aging and current gerontological, geriatric and nursing theories research - reflect and apply an approach that preserves the integrity and autonomy of the elderly - apply advanced knowledge of different geriatric and psychogeriatric diseases to be able to assess the specific preventive measures, care and rehabilitation needs of the multimorbid elderly - show advanced knowledge of pharmacokinetic changes during the aging, drug-related problems in elderly - use medical engineering equipment in a safe way - apply and independently meet the elderly's specific needs of terminal care - demonstrate advanced knowledge of organisation and leadership in the care and nursing of elderly

Content

Part 1 Gerontology 6 HE credits Gerontology 6 ECTS The view on the elderly in the society Fundamental values and ethical attitudes Theories of aging from a biological, psychological, social and mental perspective The aging from a cultural perspective The health and unhealth of the elderly in a life span perspective Epidemiology Research in the area Organizational Theory and Management in care and nursing of elderly Part 2 Geriatric diseases 3 HE credits Geriatric diseases 3 ECTS Geriatric, psychogeriatric and palliative medicine and rehabilitation Assessment and care of the comorbids Prevention Pharmacology Medical technique Part 3 clinical education within care and nursing of the elderly, 6 HE credits Clinical education in care of elderly people 6 ECTS The placement consists of a 3-week continous period in care of the elderly, and a total of one week of field studies. The students should be trained to, independently, identify and analyse the care needs, carry out nursing actions and evaluate and reflect to get advanced knowledge in order to develop the care and their own skills.

Teaching methods

The course is carried out as distance education, half-time studies. The distance education is IT based and characterised by independent and collaborative learning. In the course, individual study assignments, work in groups, virtual discussions, seminars, lectures and field studies are used. Physical meetings are limited to 4 days at most.

Examination

All the parts are examined through individual written examinations. Limitation of the number of examinations: For all examinations, it is stated that the student has the right to participate in a total of six examinations. Student without approved results after three completed examinations may be offered to retake a part or course once more. Dates and times of the examinations are announced at the beginning of the course.
