Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should have acquired
- advanced knowledge and understanding of psychological and social aspects that may affect disease development, disease experience and healing, and any importance of these aspects in connection with disease/injury and treatment,
- ability to critically review theories and research findings regarding the effect of psychological and social factors on disease development and treatment, and ability to take an independent approach,
- skills to relate to possible applications in the clinical work and there be able to identify and communicate the importance of and the interaction between biological, psychological and social aspects.

Content

Psychosocial perspectives on illness and care, 9 hp Based on different disease progressions; acute, chronic, life-threatening - psychosocial consequences of disease and treatment are treated Historical and cultural changes in the approach are treated and analysed.

The importance of psychosocial factors such as disease experience, coping/manageability and participation of the individual, to the disease progression and treatment options are discussed. Also conditions in the social/societal area, e.g. social background, access to a social network and the socio-economic situation and their importance to the disease progression and treatment options are discussed and problematised. Prevention of negative psychosocial consequences, 6 hp Possibilities to prevent and minimise negative consequences of disease/injury or high-technological treatment in the care, and to promote good living conditions despite disease/injury are treated with a focus on cooperation between different professions. Effect measuring instruments are treated.

Teaching methods

Teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning in which forms of work provide opportunities for the student to take active responsibility for their learning. The teaching is given as lectures, group assignments, seminars and individual work. Special emphasis is laid on student-activating teaching and problem-oriented methods.

Examination

The examination takes place in two compulsory seminars. Part 1 is examined through a group assignment in which psychosocial aspects on the selected disease group within at least two different progressions (see above) are contrasted against each other. Part 2 is examined through an individual minor essay in which the application of the theoretical knowledge is investigated and analysed based on the own professional platform. Both seminars take place in an interprofessional group.

Part 1 is graded with Fail/Pass. Part 2 is graded according to the three-grade scale. For a Pass with distinction in the entire course, a Pass in part 1 and a Pass with distinction in part 2, are required.

Students who have not passed the regular examination are entitled to participate in five examinations. Students without approved results after three examinations can be offered to retake the course or parts of it once more; subject to availability.

If the student has failed six examinations, no additional examination will be offered. Submission of a blank examination is regarded as an examination. Examination for which the student registered but not participated in does not count as an examination. Home examination that has been opened via the learning management system counts as an examination session even if the examination is not submitted.

Late submissions of examinations are not accepted. Students who have not submitted on time are referred to re-examination.
