Summer Courses Abroad

Below you will find presentations of summer courses arranged by our partner universities and other organizations that Karolinska Institutet has a connection to.

The courses are mainly within medicine and health related topics, but also within other areas such as languages, social sciences and technology. You will have a fun and interesting summer!

Please note that these are courses NOT included in the ordinary exchange programme through Karolinska Institutet. Most of the courses will therefore cost money. For more information, please contact the university/organisation directly.

Americas

Colombia 

This summer, Universidad del Rosario, Colombia, offer several summer courses, for instance "Methods in the Development of Synthetic Vaccines" and "Primary Health Care in Colombia". The courses are held in Spanish. More information about the application is coming soon.

Asien

Hong Kong

The Chinese University of Hong Kong is inviting KI students (medical doctors and biomedicine) to participate in their summer research school (June-August). The application deadline is February 29. The summer research school has no tuition fee; however, you will need to cover an administrative fee, travel, accommodation, and living expenses. Information about the research projects in the field of "Medicine."

 

USA

The Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) offers intensive, short-term academic summer programmes providing undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the U.S. while enhancing leadership skills. You must be a Swedish citizen.

Europe

Denmark 

Aarhus University arranges summer courses in English; "Clinical Global Infectious Diseases" and "Healthy Entrepreneurship and Innovation" in July - August. 

Each year in August, the Copenhagen School of Global Health offers courses such as "Clinical Global Infectious Disease" and "Healthy Entrepreneurship and Innovation" will be offered, which KI students can attend without paying a course fee (though you will need to cover accommodation, travel, and living expenses). In December 2024, Aarhus University will list available summer courses for 2025.

England

Spend your summer in Cambridge. Summer courses are given in immunology, psychology, microbiology and many others. There is also the possiblity to apply to "English for academic purposes" and "IELTS Preparation course".

King's College London offers summer courses in health sciences.

Queen Mary University of London offers summer courses in Global Health. As a KI Student you receive a 10% discount on the course fee.

Eurolife

KI is part of the Eurolife network, whose members organize several summer courses across Europe. The courses have different focuses, take place during various periods, have different deadlines, and may incur costs that you will need to cover yourself.

France 

Université Angers arranges several summer courses, such as Bioinformatics, Simulation in Health Care, and Vascular, offered in either French or English. Information about the offerings for 2025 will be updated.

Germany

The 8th Bonn Brain Conference will take place from March 23 – 25 2026. No application date is set yet.

BonnBrain³ hopes to serve as a convergence point for diverse perspectives, promising to illuminate some of the most challenging and fascinating questions about the brain’s workings. BonnBrain³ undertakes an interdisciplinary approach to explore the intricate interplay of brain and body states, neural networks and behavior. Individual sessions feature presentations from international experts in the areas of circuit and behavior evolution, the role of network, brain and body states in different behaviors as well as computational neuroscience. The conference integrates diverse scientific backgrounds, encouraging discussions among participants whose paths might not normally cross.

 

Italy

Together with partners in Italy, the UK and the US, KI arranges a Summer School on Modern Methods in Biostatistics and Epidemiology in Treviso June 2-14 2025. The course is aimed for students with a strong interest in biostatistics and epidemiology.

Slovenia

One week course in Paliative Care at the University of Ljubljana. Application opens December 2024.

Switzerland

Amgen Scholars Programme 

ETH Zurich offers 11 scholarships for a summer research stay within the Amgen Scholars Programme. The programme applies to students studying for a Bachelor’s degree at a European university.

A closing highlight of the programme is the joint symposium for all European Amgen Scholars in Cambridge, UK.

In addition to conducting hands-on research, as an Amgen Scholar at ETH you will attend workshops and events offering both insights into state-of-the art research and the opportunity to learn cross-cutting skills such as communication, scientific writing and intercultural skills. 

Application for 2025 starts from November 1 2024 and lasts until February 1 2025.

Student Summer Research Fellowship 

The Student Summer Research Fellowship (ETH SSRF) programme offers undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to gain their first research experience in an area of their choice. The fellowship provided by the Computer Science Department of ETH Zurich takes place during two summer months and is open to all students worldwide. 

The Netherlands

Summer courses for (bio)medicine students, within Biobanking, Global Health and Transplantation Medicine are given at the University of Groningen. More information will come about the 2025 application.

The Erasmus Summer Programme in Rotterdam focuses on key principles and methods of quantitative medical research. Each course is designed to fully satisfy the needs of international students with a specific interest such as clinical medicine, general practice, public health, epidemiology, genetics or biostatistics.

Summer courses within "Life Sciences", i.e. Global Health, Epidemiology, Toxicology and Infectious Diseases are given at Utrecht Summer School.
