If something happens during your stay abroad

If something happens during your stay abroad, it is important that you know what to do and who to contact. Here you will find support and guidance in different situations, as well as information about your insurance.

Support and contact

  • First, contact your International Coordinator, Programme Director, or other contact person you had prior to your stay abroad
  • You can also contact a person at the host university or host organisation
  • Inform KI as soon as possible

KI is available for support if needed, however is not an emergency contact service. In urgent situations, you should always turn to local resources or your insurance. Please note that responses from KI may take time, especially outside regular office hours.

In case of an emergency

In the event of an emergency, for example illness, an accident, or a deteriorating security situation where you need immediate assistance:

  • Seek help locally (hospital, police or equivalent)
  • Contact Falck Global Assistance (Student UT) at +46 8 587 717 49 or fga@se.falck.com (available 24/7)
  • Inform KI and your emergency contact as soon as possible

See more information about insurance further down on this page and on your insurance certificate.

What should I do if something happens?

Illness or accident

  • Seek medical care according to local procedures
  • Within the EU/EEA, you should primarily use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
  • Contact KI if needed
  • Call 1177 (+46 77 111 77 00, available 24/7) if you want advice from Swedish healthcare professionals

Theft or loss

If you are a victim of theft or lose something:

  • Report it to the police
  • Keep receipts and other documentation
  • Contact KI if needed
  • In case of loss of passport or ID: contact the your nearest embassy or consulate

Work-related injury or risk of infection

If you experience a work-related injury, for example a needlestick injury or exposure to bloodborne infection:

Contact with the embassy

You can receive support from your embassy or consulate, for example in case of loss of a passport, serious incidents, or if you need to contact local authorities. Always follow the advice of your embassy and local authorities.

Student UT insurance

As a student at KI, you are covered by Kammarkollegiet’s Student UT insurance during your stay abroad. The insurance is valid 24 hours a day in the study country for the entire study or internship period. It also applies during direct travel to and from the study country.

In emergency situations, you should contact Falck Global Assistance (see above).

If you need to use the insurance

If something happens:

  • Contact Falck in emergency situations
  • Keep receipts, certificates, and other documentation
  • Report theft to the police
  • Submit a claim according to instructions from KI or via Kammarkollegiet

More information about the insurance and how to submit a claim can be found on Kammarkollegiet’s website.

Practical advice

Before and during your stay – remember to:

  • Add ICE contacts (In Case of Emergency) to your phone (see Before your stay abroad)
  • Save important contact details
  • Download the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs’ app Resklar
  • Find out where the nearest embassy or consulate is located

Important to keep in mind

You are responsible for following local procedures and contacting the appropriate authorities, but KI will provide support if something happens.
