Bachelor's Programme in Biomedicine

Bachelor's Programme in Biomedicine

  • 180 credits
  • 3 years
  • Start of programme: Introductory week late August. Lectures begin 1 September, 2025.
  • Degree: Bachelor of Medical Science with a Major in Biomedicine

The Bachelor's Programme in Biomedicine at Karolinska Institutet is an international study programme taught in English. Graduates in Biomedicine have a broad knowledge of the biology and pathology of the human body and an understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying major global diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, infections and neurological diseases.

Programme presentation

The programme runs in an active research environment, in close contact with the front-line biomedical research performed at Karolinska Institutet. Since biomedicine is a discipline built around international collaboration, you are encouraged to study part of the programme at one of our international partner universities.

The curriculum consists of courses in general natural sciences, together with more medically oriented courses. As a student, you are trained in laboratory practices and scientific methods, and introduced to basic and translational research. Teaching is conducted at several of the departments at Karolinska Institutet.

The final semester consists of a degree project, which provides you with the opportunity of choosing your own subject area within the field of biomedicine. The project is carried out at either an academic institution or a pharmaceutical company, in Sweden or abroad.

Career opportunities

The programme gives you a solid base for further studies at a master's level, such as the Master's Programmes in Biomedicine, Bioentrepreneurship or Toxicology at Karolinska Institutet. The programme provides a foundation for a career in research, management, marketing, clinical trials, or in media relating to the field of biomedicine, in either the life science sector or an academic setting.
