About the programme
One degree, two titles
The programme is offered jointly by Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University. Upon completion, you are awarded a single degree with two titles: a Master of Medical Science from Karolinska Institutet and a Master of Science from Stockholm University.
Student profile
You may have a background in either health sciences or computer and systems sciences.
Programme summary
First semester
During the first semester, if you have a technical background, you will study basic medical sciences as well as healthcare organisation and management. If you have a healthcare background, you will instead learn basic computer and systems sciences. The semester concludes with a joint course in health care information systems.
Second semester
The second semester covers basic health informatics methods for user needs and requirements engineering. You will also learn methods for evaluating different aspects of health information systems during and after implementation, as well as health informatics standards. In addition, you will be introduced to data science methods and take a course in scientific methods at an advanced level.
Third semester
The third semester gives an introduction to project management, where you will apply previously studied data science methods in a project setting. You also choose between a course in information security and a course in entrepreneurship. Furthermore, you will explore current research topics in health informatics through a course that prepares you for your upcoming scientific study.
Fourth semester
The fourth and final semester consists of an independent thesis project, in which you carry out a larger scientific study.
