For students attending the Master's Programme in Biostatistics and Data Science Study information and regulations

Here you find current information and regulations during your two years of studies.

Degrees and degree certificate

What degrees are awarded?

The master's programme in Biostatistics and Data Science leads to a joint degree between Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University. Degrees are awarded by all three universities, with the following titles in English and Swedish.

Karolinska Institutet:
Degree of Master of Medical Science with a major in Biostatistics and Data Science
Medicine masterexamen med huvudområdet biostatistik och datavetenskap

KTH Royal Institute of Technology:
Degree of Master of Science with a major in Biostatistics and Data Science
Teknologie masterexamen inom huvudområdet biostatistik och datavetenskap

Stockholm University:
Degree of Master of Science, Main field of Study: Biostatistics and Data Science
Filosofie masterexamen Huvudområdet: Biostatistik och datavetenskap.

The titles of the degrees differ between the three universities, since each awards a degree with English and Swedish titles consistent with their internal regulations.

Degree certificate

A student who fulfills the requirement for the degree shall, upon request, receive a degree certificate. The degree certificate will contain the logos of all three universities and details of the degrees awarded.

Stockholm University has been assigned the task of issuing degree certificates, on behalf of and in collaboration with all three universities, for the master's programme in Biostatistics and Data Science. A degree certificate can be requested from the degree office at Stockholm University. There is no cost associated with obtaining the degree certificate.

How do I cite the degrees on my CV?

Students receive degrees from three universities, as described above. An example of a possible citation is as follows:

Master of Science with a Major in Biostatistics and Data Science (120 credits). August 2024-May 2026. Joint degree between Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University with degrees awarded by all three universities.

Graduation ceremonies and celebrations

Students who graduate from the master's programme in Biostatistics and Data Science receive degrees from all three universities (KI,KTH,SU) and are invited to the graduation ceremonies and celebrations of all three universities. There are essentially two types of ceremonies/celebrations:

  1. For students who have applied for or received a degree certificate. These are sometimes called conferment ceremonies. The SU ceremony is open to students who have applied for a degree certificate, whereas KTH requires the degree certificate to be issued.
  2. For all students in the final term of the programme, without the requirement of a degree certificate.

KTH arranges only events of type 1, KI arranges only events of type 2, and SU arranges events of both types. Information can be found on the following web pages:

KI Graduation celebration for master's programmes
SU Conferment of master's degrees
KTH Graduation ceremony

The date of the KTH ceremony depends on the KTH school responsible for the programme; our programme is organised by the SCI school.

KI will invite you to a "graduation ceremony" (4 June 2026), a farewell party organised by KI (5 June 2026), and a graduation party organised by the student union (6 June 2026). The KI graduation ceremony is similar in nature to the SU and KTH graduation ceremonies, except students receive a congratulatory greeting rather than a diploma because it is held before the programme is completed.

In addition to the conferment ceremony, SU arranges a celebration and "master's dinner" for all students who have completed their degree during the previous year or expect to complete their degree this coming summer. This will be held on 19 May 2026; students will receive a mail with further information. This event is of type 2 (see above) but for students who expect to complete the programme by the end of Spring term. The KI events are also of type 2, but are open to all students in the final term of the programme, including those who do not intent to complete the programme by the end of term.

To reiterate, students in the master's programme in Biostatistics and Data Science are registered at three universities and welcome to the ceremonies and celebrations of all three universities. Stockholm University has been assigned the task of issuing degree certificates for students who complete our programme, but the degree certificate is issued on behalf of and in collaboration with all three universities. That is, the degree certificate is valid for the KTH graduation ceremony that requires a degree certificate.
