Checklist for students leaving Karolinska Institutet
We sincerely hope that you have had a rewarding and enjoyable time as a student at Karolinska Institutet. Whether you are leaving Sweden or staying on after your studies, there are a few practical things to take care of before moving on. We have gathered the most important information and next steps here.
Certificates, transcripts and graduation
If you have completed your programme, you need to apply for your degree certificate from Karolinska Institutet. The degree certificate is issued free of charge, but you must apply for it yourself.
If you have been an exchange student at Karolinska Institutet, or if you have taken individual courses, you can get a transcript of records after you have completed your studies.
You can create a transcript of records showing your study results in Ladok, using your student account.
Karolinska Institutet organizes graduation ceremonies for students who have completed their undergraduate education or their master's programme at KI.
At the end of your studies, you will receive a graduate survey. Your feedback is important and helps Karolinska Institutet improve its programmes and the student experience.
We encourage you to take the time to respond to the survey before you leave KI.
If you are staying in Sweden after your studies
If you are a non-EU/EEA student and plan to stay in Sweden after completing your studies, there are some important things to consider. You must make sure that you have the necessary insurance and a valid residence permit for your continued stay.
Non-EU/EEA citizens who have just graduated may be able to apply for an 'after studies' residence permit through the Swedish Migration Agency.
If you have applied for this permit but do not yet have a Swedish personal identity number, it is important to arrange private health insurance. This is to ensure that you are covered if you need medical care before your permit and personal identity number have been granted.

If you are an EU/EEA citizen without a Swedish personal identity number and without a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from your home country, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have sufficient health insurance after you have finished your studies.
As an EU/EEA citizen, you have the right to work, study or live in Sweden without a residence permit, as long as you can support yourself. This is called the right of residence.

If you are moving to a new address in Sweden after your studies, make sure to report your new address to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).
If you are leaving Sweden after your studies
If you are listed in the Swedish Population Register and have a Swedish personal identity number, you must notify the Swedish Tax Agency if you plan to live outside Sweden for one year or more.
You should notify the Swedish Tax Agency at least one week before moving, preferably through their e-service.
If you return to Sweden at a later date, you can re-register using your existing personal identity number.
Before leaving Sweden, remember to close your Swedish bank account. Otherwise, fees or other charges may continue to apply.
Contact your bank directly for information about what is required.
If you have worked in Sweden during your studies or for a longer period, you may need to contact the Swedish Pensions Agency regarding pension-related matters.
Practical things to take care of before leaving KI
You will keep access to your student account – including student email, Canvas, Ladok and Microsoft 365 – for 365 days after you finish your studies.
Towards the end of this period, you will receive a notice to your student email address with information about when your account will be closed.
Before your account is closed, make sure to:
- save files from your home directory
- download any emails or attachments you want to keep
- check whether there is material in Canvas or other KI systems that you may need later
Your KI card is only valid for as long as you are a student at Karolinska Institutet.
Your access to library services changes when your studies end.
If you have stayed in accommodation through KI Housing, make sure to read the moving-out instructions before your departure.
If you are preparing for your next step after graduation, make use of KI’s career support and resources during your final semester.
