Applying for a degree certificate

To receive your degree certificate, you must apply for it yourself.

You apply for your degree certificate through Ladok for students. If you have an active student account, you apply for your degree certificate through Ladok for students. If you have a Swedish personal identity number, you can create an eduID and apply for your degree via Ladok. If your student account is no longer active, you can apply via Ladok for alumni.

In Ladok, you can:

  • see an overview of your studies
  • download study certificates that can be digitally verified
  • apply for degree certificates

If you have studied at multiple Swedish universities or colleges, you will have access to all your study information with the same login. With your eduID, you can also log in to certain other university websites, such as antagning.se.

If you no longer have an active student account or an eduID/BankID, you can order a study certificate by sending an e-mail about a certificate of study.

Apply through Ladok

If you have an active student account, log in to Ladok for students using your login credentials.

You can also log in with a student account from another institution. If you are logged in to one of your other institutions where you have studied, you can easily switch to Karolinska Institutet by clicking the change institution tab and selecting Karolinska Institutet.

If you have a Swedish personal identity number, you can create an eduID to log in to Ladok for students.

Here's how:

  1. Go to https://eduid.se/ and create an eduID.
  2. Log in with your eduID at https://www.student.ladok.se/. Choose "eduID Sweden" from the list of institutions on the login page.

Read this before sending in your application

  • You are responsible for ensuring that your application is complete. Before applying for a degree certificate, it is crucial to verify that your personal information in Ladok is accurate:
    • First name, last name, and personal identity number are retrieved from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) to Ladok and transferred to Ladok. These details appear on your degree certificate, and they cannot be changed once it has been issued.
    • If a preferred name is indicated in the population register, only the preferred name will be displayed in Ladok. Therefore, if you want all your first names to appear on the degree certificate, you need to include a comment in your application or email examen@ki.se along with your application, as we do not amend this once your degree certificate is issued. Therefore, check how your first and last name are displayed in Ladok when you apply.
    • If you have had a temporary personal identity number but have received a Swedish personal identity number from the Swedish Tax Agency, you need to notify us to have it changed in Ladok. Include a comment in your application or email examen@ki.se along with your application.
  • Make sure that all courses to be included in the degree certificate are completed in Ladok before submitting the application - otherwise, contact the relevant department or course-giving institution.
  • If you are enrolled in a programme and have courses from other institutions that should be included in the programme, you need to ensure that you apply for credit transfer within your programme and have the credit transfer approved before applying for a degree certificate.
  • The degree certificate is issued in both Swedish and English. The degree certificate also includes an English description of your degree, known as a Diploma Supplement (DS).
  • In the application form, you can leave a message. Any message you include in your application will normally be read when your application is processed. If your case is urgent, you can email examen@ki.se.
  • The date of issuance of your degree certificate is the date on which it is issued, not when you submit your application or when you complete your last course within a program.

Your application is assessed against applicable national and local regulations. If the application is approved, a digital degree certificate with an e-stamp is issued, which you can download as a PDF file from Ladok. The degree certificate cinfirms that you have achieved the knowledge and skills up to a certain level and within a certain field. You can learn more about applicable regulations under Examination Regulations at Karolinska Institutet.

Common Questions about the Application:

Degree certificates at Karolinska Institutet are issued digitally. You will receive a notification by email when your degree is issued, and you can download your digital degree certificate as a PDF file in Ladok.

Previously issued degree certificates will not be replaced with digital versions.

The normal processing time is two weeks. During peak periods in January and June, as well as during the summer holidays, the processing time may be slightly longer. Processing times may also be extended depending on the complexity of your application, for example if credit transfers need to be assessed or other factors require additional processing.

If we have any questions regarding your application, we will contact you from examen@ki.se.

Certain groups are given priority, such as professional degrees with licensing requirements from the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).

If you are unable to apply for your degree certificate using any of the methods described on this page, please contact us at examen@ki.se, and we will assist you.

Please note that if you are an alumnus or alumna and your student account is no longer active, you can apply via Ladok for alumni. Log in to Ladok for alumni with BankID or Freja eID+ by visiting Ladok for students and selecting Ladok for alumni.
