There is one local student safety representative at each department and two chief student safety representatives at KI. You should first contact your local student safety representative.
For students at first-cycle and second-cycle level, it is the department responsible for the course you are registered on where you find your student safety representative.

About student safety representatives
A student safety representative should be someone with knowledge of and an interest in work environment issues.
- Each department constitutes a safety area within KI.
- The student safety representative represents all students and doctoral students within their safety area. Doctoral students at the Department of Dental Medicine are represented by the chief safety representative appointed by Medicinska föreningen.
- The student safety representative must be well acquainted with the studies and work carried out within the safety area, and have knowledge of and an interest in work environment issues.
Student safety representative
A student safety representative is appointed by the student unions and represents students in study-related work environment issues at departmental level. The student safety representative is primarily a partner to the education provider in preventive work environment management, but must also monitor and follow up that KI meets the requirements of work environment regulations.
Chief student safety representative
The chief student safety representatives are appointed by KI’s two student unions. They must be involved in KI-wide student work environment issues and also coordinate the activities of the local student safety representatives and represent them externally.
Student safety delegate
The student safety delegate is elected by the student unions for a programme/section and is a link between students and the student safety representative at the relevant department.
Term of office and training for the role
The student union decides the length of the term of office for student safety representatives and student safety delegates. Students appointed as safety representatives or safety delegates may take up or leave the role at any time during the current term of office. The chief student safety representatives and the unions must maintain regular contact, and towards the end of the term of office they must plan when new student safety representatives are to be appointed.
Notification of student safety representatives
When a student safety representative has been appointed by the student union, the union notifies the education provider - Karolinska Institutet. Only once student safety representatives have been clearly reported to the education provider do they have the right to act in the role, in accordance with the Work Environment Act. An appointed student safety representative may contact the head of department directly once they have been appointed.

Safety areas for chief student safety representatives
The safety areas for KI’s two chief student safety representatives are divided as follows:
- Medicinska föreningen appoints safety representatives: For doctoral students at all departments and for students at all departments except the Department of Dental Medicine.
- Odontologiska föreningen appoints safety representatives: For students at first-cycle and second-cycle level at the Department of Dental Medicine.

The course Systematic work environment management for students covers various aspects of the work environment for students and phd-students. It is compulsory if you have been appointed as a student safety representative.
