The course is an introduction to concepts and theories related to Global Health. It will explore the wide range of global health challenges facing low and middle income countries today including measurement of health status, infectious and chronic diseases, injuries, maternal and sexual reproductive health, global health governance structures and diplomacy and global environmental health and complex emergencies.

Welcome to the course Introduction to Global Health
The course starts September 2, 2024.
A very varm welcome to the first course on the master program in Global Health. We are looking forward to meet you all on September 2, 2024 at 9:00 with an informal gathering in the Widerström Building (Widerströmska Huset) outside of the lecture hall (to be decided).
Widerström Building (Widerströmska Huset) is located at the end of the Karolinska Institutet Campus area next to the junction between Solnavägen and Tomtebodavägen. (the address is:Tomtebodavägen 18 a).
The first half of the of the first day will be an overall introduction to the programme. It will be followed by a roll-call and registration. Please note that attendance at the registration is mandatory and if you are not present you can lose your place in the course and the programme, so please contact us beforehand if you have any difficulties attending the first day.
During the first day you will receive detailed information about the course and being a student at Karolinska Institutet.

The course literature will be a mix of different course books and scientific articles.
The course is an introduction to the concept of Global Health and should give the basis for the further studies within the Master's programme. The following themes and fields will be highlighted: - Global health and public health - promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation - Health and development – the world seen from a perspective of change - Disease, health and demographic transitions - The importance of poverty for global health - Burden of disease - Communicable diseases of importance for global health - Non-communicable diseases - Sexual and reproductive health - Injuries - Health systems and policy - Governance, financing and management - Drugs and health - Change mechanisms in health care services - Equity, democracy and health - Emergencies and conflicts - Climate changes - Epidemiology - Study design - Research methods - Ethics - Principles of critical reading of a scientific paper. Literature Search using the Internet and library.
