Upgrade your student KI ID to a higher authentication assurance level
All students with a Swedish personal identity number whose student account was created before 2025 must upgrade their account to a higher authentication assurance level to retain access to Ladok. This upgrade also enables you to set at new password for the student account via the ID Portal.
Ladok, the national study administration support system, is implementing changes to its identity and authorisation management. This will require users to have a higher so-called identity assurance level, AL2.
A step-by-step guide is available here.
If you do not have BankID, Freja eID or eduID, you must contact Student IT to complete a manual identity verification. Please ensure that you are able to present valid identification, such as passport, Swedish ID card or Swedish driving license.
Why do I need to do this?
If you do not upgrade your authentication assurance level, you will no longer be able to sign in to Ladok. Without access to Ladok, you will be unable to view your results, register for courses or register for examinations.
Important!
- Once you have upgraded your assurance level, it may take up to 24 hours before you are able to sign in to Ladok again. This is important to keep in mind if, for example, you plan to register for a course or an examination in Ladok.
- Please note that a student account can lose its assurance level (AL2). This may occur if you foret your password and contact Student IT to have a new password issued remotely. In such case, you will need to upgrade your assureance level again via the ID portal. If you change your password yourself via KI´s ID Portal, the assurance level is not affected.
How do I know if my KI ID has been upgraded?
Sign in to the ID Portal using your your e-identification. If your KI ID is upgraded, you will see the following information displayed:

Background: Swamid
Karolinska Institutet is part of SWAMID (Swedish Academic Identity Federation) and therefore needs to follow the rules that exist regarding how the digital identities of higher education institutions are managed.
One of the rules is the assuance level of accounts, i.e. how sure we are about who holds a student account.
As a member of SWAMID, KI can use quality-assured and secure login for researchers, teachers and students in various services - both in and outside Sweden.
SWAMID has different identity assurance levels for its users, where the basic level is called AL1. Today, the majority of KI's user accounts are at the AL1 level, but the higher assurance level AL2 may be required for access to more services in the future.
