Objectives
The course consists of three parts, 10.5 HE credits: Part 1: Nutrition (Nutrition): 1.5 HE credits Part 2: Cariology (Cariology): 4.5 HE credits Part 3: Pharmacology (Pharmacology): 4.5 HE credits Part 1: Nutrition (Nutrition): 1.5 HE credits On completion of the course, the student should: - have basic knowledge about nutrition - be able to account for the relationship between nutritional intakes, the energy metabolism and energy needs. - be able to give diet recommendations in caries prevention. Part 2: Cariology (Cariology), 4.5 HE credits On completion of the course, the student should: - be able to account for the aetiology of the caries disease and prophylactic principles - Be able to account for the biochemistry of the saliva and understand its effect on the oral health - be able to account for different fluoride preparations, their modes of action and toxic aspects and be able to give adequate recommendations concerning fluoride supply. Part 3: Pharmacology (Pharmacology), 4.5 HE credits On completion of the course, the student should: - have basic knowledge within general pharmacology to understand drug kinetics and dynamics - have knowledge of adverse drug reactions, drug and xerostomia and infection - and analgesic drugs - be able to write a recipe on the drugs the dental hygienist where has right to prescribe..
Content
Part 1: Nutrition (Nutrition), 1.5 HE credits This part treats nourishment and diet recommendations. Overview of energy needs and the energy value of various nutrients, and the importance of nutrition for oral health. Overview and interpretation of diet anamnesis take place in a computer laboratory session. Part 2: Cariology (Cariology), 4.5 HE credits Within this part, the student acquires advanced knowledge in cariology with an emphasis on the aetiology, treatment and prophylaxis of the caries disease. Part 3: Pharmacology (Pharmacology), 4.5 HE credits The part pharmacology deals with drug kinetics and dynamics and adverse drug reactions. Prescription exercises are included.

Teaching methods
Teaching methods Part 1: Nutrition (Nutrition): 1.5 HE credits 2, Lectures, seminars, demonstrations, group work, laboratory sessions and self-study. Part 2: Cariology (Cariology): 4.5 HE credits Lectures, seminars, demonstrations, group work, laboratory sessions and self-study. Part 3: Pharmacology (Pharmacology); 4.5 HE credits Lectures, seminars, demonstrations, group work, laboratory sessions and self-study.
Examination
Part 1: Nutrition (Nutrition); 1.5 HE credits Written examination. Part 2: Cariology (Cariology); 4.5 HE credits Written examination. Part 3: Pharmacology (Pharmacology); 4.5 HE credits Written examination. For all parts, compulsory attendance in seminars, group exercises, laboratory sessions and auscultations applies. In case of absence, assignments that compensate the absence are provided. For the grade Pass, the grade pass with credit in Cariology and Pharmacology are required and lowest the grade Pass in Nutrition. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions The students who not are passed after regular test/the assessment opportunity have the right to further two tests. If the student is not passed after three examinations, he/she is recommended to go the course again at the next regular course date before further three examinations are given. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination or new admission to the course is given.
