For admission to semester 2, at least 20 credits from semester 1 should be approved

Objectives

The course consists of three parts, 10.5 HE credits:

Part 1: Nutrition (Nutrition): 1.5 HE credits
Part 2: Cariology (Cariology): 4.5 HE credits
Part 3: Pharmacology (Pharmacology): 4.5 HE credits

Part 1: Nutrition (Nutrition): 1.5 HE credits
On completion of the course, the student should:
- be able to describe basic knowledge about nutrition
- be able to explain and understand the relationship between nutrition, general and oral health

Part 2: Cariology (Cariology), 4.5 HE credits
On completion of the course, the student should:
- be able to desribe the aetiology of caries disease and prophylactic principles
- be able to independently register clinical caries and calculate caries index
- be able to diagnose caries activity and caries risk
- be able to analyse the caries risk and resistance factors
- independently propose measures to reduce the risk of further caries development and with guidance be able to establish therapy plans for  treatment of cariologic disease
- be able to understand the impact of saliva on oral health
- be able to desribe different fluoride preparations, their modes of action and toxic aspects and be able to give adequate recommendations concerning fluoride supply.

Part 3: Pharmacology (Pharmacology), 4.5 HE credits
On completion of the course, the student should:
- have requried basic knowledge within general pharmacology to understand drug kinetics and dynamic effects on the oral cavity
- be able to understand adverse drug side effects in the oral cavity and be able to report these effects
- be able to write a precription of drugs within the profession of dental hygienist.

Content

Nutrition, 1.5 hp This part contains basic nutrition and the importance of nutrition for the general and oral health.
Overview and interpretation of diet anamnesis take place in a computer laboratory session. Cariology, 4.5 hp Within this part, the student acquires a deeper knowledge of Cariology with emphasis on
caries disease etiology, treatment and prevention. Farmakology, 4.5 hp This part deals with pharmacology pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, special pharmacology in various therapeutic areas, variability in drug response, drug therapy during pregnancy and breastfeeding, adverse drug reactions and reporting, and how to write prescriptions.

Part 1: Nutrition (Nutrition): 1.5 HE credits 2,
Lecture, own work as a homework assignment, and monitoring and group work around homework using the computer program DietistXP

Part 2: Cariology (Cariology): 4.5 HE credits
Lectures, group work and self-studies.

Part 3: Pharmacology (Pharmacology); 4.5 HE credits
Lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions and self-studies.

Examination

Part 1: Nutrition (Nutrition); 1.5 HE credits
Written examination.

Part 2: Cariology (Cariology); 4.5 HE credits
Written examination.

Part 3: Pharmacology (Pharmacology); 4.5 HE credits
Written examination.

For all parts, compulsory attendance in seminars, group exercises and laboratory sessions. In case of absence, assignments that compensate the absence are provided. For the grade Pass, the grade pass with credit in Cariology and Pharmacology are required and lowest the grade Pass in Nutrition.

Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions
The students who not are passed after regular test/the assessment opportunity have the right to further five tests. If the student is not passed after six examinations no additional examination or new admission to the course is given. As the examination session count the times that the student participated in one and the same sample. Submission of blank exam counts as examination. Examination for which the student registered but not participating are not counted as examination

Examination according to the earlier literature list of this course syllabus is provided a year from 2013-01-01.

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education.
