Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should: - Have basic knowledge of nutrition in order to understand the relationship between nutritional intake, energy metabolism and energy needs in order to be able to give diet recommendations in caries prevention - Be able to understand and account for the aetiology of the caries disease and prophylactic principles - Be able to carry out caries registration, set a cariologic diagnosis and make a caries risk assessment - Be able to account for the biochemistry of the saliva and understand its effect on the oral health - Be able to account for various fluorine preparations, their modes of action and toxic aspects and be able to give adequate recommendations concerning fluoride supply - Have basic knowledge of general pharmacology to understand the kinetics and dynamics of drugs - Have knowledge of adverse drug reactions, drugs and xerostomia, infection and analgesic - drugs. - Be able to prescribe the drugs that the dental hygienist has a prescription right for

Content

The aim of the course is for the student to acquire advanced knowledge in cariology, clinical oral diagnostics and pharmacology as a basis for further studies and patient treatment. Nutrition (Nutrition) 1.5 credits This part treats nourishment and diet recommendations. Overview of energy needs and the energy value of various nutrients, and the importance of nutrition for oral health. Overview and interpretation of diet anamnesis take place in a nutrition computer laboratory session. Cariology (Cariology) 4.5 credits Within this part, the student acquires advanced knowledge in cariology with an emphasis on the aetiology, treatment and prophylaxis of the caries disease. Pharmacology (Pharmacology) 4.5 credits The part Pharmacology deals with the kinetics and dynamics of drugs and adverse drug reactions. Prescription exercises are included.

Teaching methods

The course comprises full-time studies. The study forms consist of lectures, seminars, demonstrations, group exercises and laboratory sessions and self-study. Current research is presented in connection with the lectures.

Examination

For all parts, compulsory attendance in seminars, group exercises, laboratory sessions and auscultations applies. In case of absence, assignments that compensate the absence are provided. Examination forms for the different parts: Nutrition Written examination. Cariology Written examination. Pharmacology Written examination.

Transitional provisions

Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions Students who have not passed the regular examination/assessment session are entitled to two more examinations. If the student is not approved after three examinations, he/she is recommended to retake the course at the next regular opportunity before three more examination opportunities are given. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination or new admission to the course is given. Other Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
