Specific entry requirements
For admission to the course, it is required that at least 20 credits from semester 1 are passed.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Account for clinical indexes that are used at diagnostics of periodontal tissues and caries lesions
- From a disciplinary foundation explain the inflammatory process at gingivitis and periodontitis and its influence on the general condition.
- Account theoretically for how tobacco can influence oral tissues.
- Account for evidence-based non-surgical treatment and its importance for the periodontal health
- Account for the mineralisation, composition, structure and effect on the periodontal health of the calculus.
- From a disciplinary foundation account for the bare root surface, pathology pathogenesis and aetiology and for the aetiology, diagnostics, treatment and prevention of the root caries and how dental hyper sensitivity can influence the individual's general well-being.
- Account for different oral hygiene aids and its fields of use from scientific evidence theoretically.
- Account for different hand instruments at mechanical treatment of infections and its fields of use theoretically.
- Explain and understand the importance of an ergonomic working method.
- Explain and understand the importance of an empathetic and professional attitude in talk with patients about oral health.
- Review scientific articles regarding framework, contents, ethical aspects and their use for the individual and the society.
Content
The course treats the profession of the dental hygienist and develop additional perspectives from the courses Odontological prophylaxis 1 and 2.
The course gives:
- Knowledge of the inflammatory process at gingivitis and periodontitis and about the influence of tobacco on oral tissues.
- Theoretical knowledge of non-surgical periodontal treatment methods and about planning, performing and expected results.
- Theoretical knowledge about the problems of the uncovered root surface and about dental erosion with a focus on life style factors, from medical, psychological, social, and social aspects.
- Further, the course gives knowledge of communication between student and patient based on and in consideration of the patient's whole life environment.
- Explains the bases of an ergonomic working method from the work situation of the dental hygienist.
- Knowledge about and skills in scientific reviewing.
Teaching methods
The tuition forms consist of lectures, seminars and group exercises.
To acquire necessary knowledge, compulsory attendance at all course elements applies.
The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.
Examination
The assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge take place through written examination, individual written assignment and through oral presentation in seminars.
To pass the course, attendance at compulsory course elements is also required.
Limitation of number test- or practical training sessions
Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.
Transitional provisions
If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/close-down.
The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the spring semester of 2016. Examination will be provided until the spring of 2018 for students who have not completed the course.
Other directives
The course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
