For admission to semester 2, at least 20 credits from semester 1 should be approved

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should: - be able to account for the theoretical basis of the effects of the non-surgical treatment on periodontal health - be able to account for clinical indices used in diagnosing periodontal tissues and in diagnosing caries - have knowledge of the mineralisation, composition and structure of the analysis - be able to account for gingival inflammation with various causal backgrounds - have knowledge of basic caries prophylactic measures - have knowledge and understanding of the ergonomics concerning the work situation of the dental hygienist - have basic knowledge and understanding of the different stages of the nursing process in the communication and interaction with the patient - have knowledge of and be able to account for the effect of tobacco use on oral tissues

Content

The course prepares and introduces the student to the clinical work. The subject-specific contents of the course consist of theoretical knowledge of non-surgical treatment methods, treatment planning, implementation and expected results of the treatment given by the dental hygienist. The course gives advanced knowledge of communication between students and patients with a focus on our multicultural society. New research results are brought up and discussed.

Teaching methods

The tuition forms consist of lectures, seminars and group exercises. Current research is brought up and discussed in lectures and seminars. The course comprises full-time studies.

Examination

The assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place through a written final examination. Compulsory attendance and active participation in seminars, group exercises and attendance as observer. In case of absence, assignments that compensate the absence are provided.

Other directives

Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions Students who are not approved after the regular examination are entitled to two more examinations. If the student is not approved after three examinations, he/she is recommended to retake the course at the next regular course date, before three more examinations are offered. If the student has failed six examinations, no additional examination or new admission to the current course is given. Other Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
