Specific entry requirements

For admission to the course, it is required that at least 20 credits from semester 1 are passed.

Students who fail a clinical placement (or equivalent) as a result of demonstrating such a serious lack of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or the patients' confidence in medical care is at risk, will only be qualified for a new clinical placement once the individual action plan has been carried out.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student can:

  • Explain, understand and carry out basic evidence-based periodontal diagnostics on patients with gingivitis and early periodontitis.
  • Assess caries frequency and calculate caries index, also from prevailing evidence carry out registration and diagnostics of clinical caries lesions.
  • Under supervision establish treatment plans based on established research and best practice.
  • Communicate individually adjusted information to patients about periodontal and cariologic diagnoses and about oral hygiene aids.
  • Explain, understand and apply different hand instruments for mechanical treatment of infections.
  • Apply a professional attitude in the dialogue with patient concerning the oral health effect on the general well-being.
  • Understand and apply hygiene procedures and disease control while also considering sustainable development.

Content

The course contains exercises in clinical mechanical treatment of infections on a phantom model and thereafter paired exercises on a fellow student under supervision. The course also introduces the student to clinical patient care that includes registration and diagnostics of periodontal and cariologic relations, treatment planning and mechanical treatment of infections. The clinical proficiency training on patient is supplemented by patient communication considering the different stages of the dental healthcare process and hygiene procedures and disease control.

Teaching methods

The learning is supported by seminars, demonstrations, pair and group exercises, auscultations, pre-clinical exercises and clinical proficiency training under supervision. All course elements are compulsory.

Demonstrations, seminars and pair and group exercises at the clinic are compulsory.

The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Examination

Assessment of the student's achievements and knowledge acquisition take place continuously during the course and through presentation of clinical skills at a clinical examination.

To pass the course, attendance at compulsory course elements is also required.

Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.

The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity.

In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course.

Transitional provisions

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the spring semester of 2019. Examination will be provided until the spring of 2021 for students who have not completed the course.

Other directives

A course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
