Odontological prophylaxis 4, 7.5 credits

For admission to semester 2, at least 20 credits from semester 1 is required. A student who has failed the placement (VFU) or the equivalent as a consequence of that the student has demonstrated so serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare have been at risk is qualified for new placement when the individual action plan has been completed.

On completion of the course, the student should: - be able to set periodontal and cariologic diagnoses and have the ability to set up an individual treatment plan - be able to use the nursing process in its various stages in communication and interaction with the patient - be able to give adequate information about the origin of dental diseases and their prevention - be able to establish a simple tobacco record - be able to understand and account for the differences between various hand instruments and know their uses - be able to carry out caries prophylactic measures - be able to make use of ergonomic principles in the implementation of non-surgical treatment - demonstrate knowledge and skills to be able to start the clinical patient care

The course introduces the student to clinical patient work including registration, diagnosis of periodontal and cariologic injuries, and therapy planning and the starting of non-surgical treatment. The course contains exercises in scaling and rotplaning technique using a phantom model. The clinical patient treatment is supplemented by patient communication considering the different stages of the caring process.

The knowledge is provided through lectures, seminars, demonstrations, group exercises, pre-clinical and clinical exercises and attendance as observers, and field studies. Current research is brought up in connection with lectures and seminars.

Assessment of the student's achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place during the course through a presentation of clinical skills in a final clinical examination and through a written final examination. The course implies compulsory attendance and active participation in demonstrations, seminars and group exercises in the clinic. Absence from compulsory clinical parts is compensated by the student himself/herself booking the corresponding number of clinic-based sessions, when access to a supervisor and clinic-based service are available. The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's placement (VFU), or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When a placement is interrupted like this, it implies that the student fails in the current part, and that a placement opportunity is used. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up showing which activities and examinations are required, before the student is given the possibility of a new placement in this course.

Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions Students who have not passed the regular examination/assessment session are entitled to two more examinations. If the student is not approved after three examinations, he/she is recommended to retake the course at the next regular opportunity before three more examination opportunities are given. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination or new admission to the course is given. Other Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
