Specific entry requirements
For admission to the course, it is required that at least 20 credits from semester 3 are passed. The clinical modules from the previous course should be passed.
Students who have failed in the clinical placement or the equivalent as a consequence of demonstrating serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude, that the patient's safety or confidence in healthcare have been at risk is qualified for new placement only when the individual action plan has been completed.
Objectives
Module 1
Odontological prophylaxis, clinical advanced study 6 credits
On completion of the course, the student can:
- Independently carry out required studies and make a diagnosis of caries and periodontitis from a scientific basis.
- Assess healthy and risk factors for the oral health in relation to the general health and involve these in treatment planning and treatment according to evidence-based methods.
- Treat patients with implants according to evidence-based methods.
- Carry out mechanical treatment of infections on patients with moderate and serious periodontitis and evaluate taken measures in regards to treatment and oral health care actions.
- Explain, understand and apply different hand instruments for clinical mechanical treatment of infections at patients with serious periodontitis.
- Apply knowledge of the damage effects of the tobacco and plan and start tobacco prevention and tobacco cessation and observe ethical and social aspects.
- Document in the patient's medical record according to current legislation, ordinances and safety precautions for a safe patient care.
- Account for indications regarding periodontal surgery and periodontal surgical methods in accordance with evidence-based methods.
- Explain and understand the importance of teamwork with dental students and joint plan and treat patients and evaluate versed measures.
- Explain and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of interprofessional cooperation with other nursing professions.
- Make treatment assessments to promote the oral and general health from relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects considering the human rights.
Module 2 Health communication, clinical 1.5 credits
- Plan and carry out individual health dialogues from behavioural science research concerning tobacco, caries and periodontal disease and highlight ethical aspects at the individual and societal level.

The course contains two modules:
- Treatment of patients with moderate and serious periodontitis and caries
- Risk factors for periodontal disease and connection to general diseases
- General diseases influence on the oral health

Teaching methods
The learning is supported by lectures, seminars, demonstrations, group work, observation and independent clinical exercises under supervision. The course comprises full-time studies.
The parts of the course imply compulsory attendance and participation in demonstrations, seminars and group work in the clinic.
The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.
Examination
Module 1
Odontological prophylaxis, clinical advanced study
Assessment of the student's achievements and knowledge take place during the course through presentation and of clinical skills at a clinical final examination.
Module 2
Health communication, clinical
Assessment of the student's achievements and knowledge take place during the course through presentation and clinical skills at a clinical final examination.
To pass the course, attendance at compulsory course elements is also required.
Limitation of number test or practical training sessions
Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.
The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course. The student has the right to go through two clinical placement opportunities.
Transitional provisions
If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/close-down.
Other directives
The course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
