Specific entry requirements

At least 20 credits from semester 3. The clinical parts from the previous course should be approved. Students who have failed the placement (VFU) or the equivalent as a consequence of demonstrating deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude so serious that the patient's safety or confidence in healthcare have been at risk is qualified for new placement only when the individual action plan has been completed.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should independently be able to: - carry out clinical studies and treatment planning, and provide treatment suggestions - assess occurring risk factors and involve these in treatment and prognosis - carry out hygiene treatment of patients with implant and implantitis - apply knowledge of the harmful effects of tobacco and start tobacco cessation - plan and carry out individual patient information concerning periodontal disease, prevention and treatment, and instruction in adequate oral hygiene procedures - make treatment evaluations and revise treatment plans, and plan and carry out maintenance programmes - have knowledge of indications for periodontal surgery and periodontal surgical methods - have knowledge of the importance of teamwork

Content

The course implies patient treatment where the student independently should examine, diagnose, treatment plan, and treat adult patients with caries, gingival inflammation and periodontitis, and patients with implants. The student should, considering risk factors, make a prognosis of the oral disease development. The course also contains treatment of the aging the patient.

Teaching methods

The knowledge is provided through lectures, seminars, demonstrations, group exercises and clinical exercises and attendance as observers. Current research is presented in connection with lectures and seminars.

Examination

Assessment of the student's achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place during the course through a presentation of clinical skills in a final clinical examination. The course implies compulsory attendance and active participation in demonstrations, seminars and group exercises in the clinic. Absence from compulsory clinical parts is compensated by the student himself/herself booking the corresponding number of clinic-based sessions, when access to a supervisor and clinic-based service are available. The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's placement (VFU), or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When a placement is interrupted like this, it implies that the student fails in the current part, and that a placement opportunity is used. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up showing which activities and examinations are required, before the student is given the possibility of a new placement in this course.

Other directives

Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions Students who have not passed the regular examination/assessment session are entitled to two more examinations. If the student is not approved after three examinations, he/she is recommended to retake the course at the next regular opportunity before three more examination opportunities are given. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination or new admission to the course is given. Other Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
