Specific entry requirements
General requirements - A very good command of English, corresponding to 550 TOEFL scores, or a very good command of Swedish, corresponding to a pass in the TISUS-test - Three years of study at a study programme in Medicine - Ability to take medical history and to perform a physical examination of a patient - Basic computer knowledge Specific requirements - Passed medical schools basic course in internal medicine or equivalent - Basic knowledge of common psychiatric disorders
Objectives
After the course, students are expected to: show a more profound knowledge in diagnostic skills and management of patients affected with common psychiatric disorders. reflect on important questions such as attitudes, ethics, gender and ethnicity in relation to psychiatry. reach a progression in knowledge and understanding of psychiatric disorders regarding its very many different facets with a starting point in each individual students level of knowledge. The course is suitable for students planning a career as a clinician, irrespective of discipline.
Content
The clinical rotation can include auscultation in various units i.e. in-patient wards, general psychiatric out-patient clinics as well as specialised units for affective disorders, psychotic disorders and eating disorders etc. An individualised schedule is set up by a responsible supervisor with regard to the students individual qualifications and interests. Emphasis will be put on the students training in psychiatry history taking and mental state examination. Time is given for studies of literature and Internet searches
Teaching methods
Mostly clinical work and auscultation at different clinics. The extent of participation in patient care is determined by the students experience and ability. The student is required to study relevant literature and to write logbook. The rotation includes personal supervision delivered by a physician at the unit. When arriving at the psychiatric department at Karolinska University Hospital - Huddinge or Solna - or at the psychiatric department at St Göran´s hospital, the student will get a detailed schedule. Any absence must be reported to the supervisor, who also makes a decision about how the student should compensate for the absence.
Examination
A logbook should be written by the student and has to be reported to the supervisor. The logbook should include relevant information about the patients encountered each day. One of the patients should be explored and presented more in detail. The logbook data has to be presented no less than five days before the end of the rotation.should compensate for the absence.
Other directives
A students work-based education may be ended immediately if the student demonstrates such a serious lack in terms of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patients confidence in medical care is jeopardised. If the work-based education is ended in this way, an individual action plan should be drawn up detailing the activities and knowledge checks required before the student may continue with work-based education. A student who has failed the work-based education due to such a serious lack in terms of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patients confidence in medical care is jeopardised is qualified to a new opportunity only when the individual action plan has been completed.
