Objectives

Aim
The aim of the course is that student should acquire knowledge, skills and understanding in psychiatry for medical students irrespective of future speciality.

The learning outcomes of the course:

  • account for diagnostics, treatment and care of patients with common mental disorders
  • examine patients with psychiatric disorders, acquire basic psychiatric medical history and perform mental state examination
  • reflect on importance of attitudes, ethics, gender and ethnicity in psychiatry
  • act respectfully toward patients, other students, teachers and staff and take active responsibility for learning

Content

The course's core is the medical speciality psychiatry. The main focus is on clinical practice with an emphasis on training in to acquire medical history and assess mental state, where student gets individual feedback to develop skills.
The student wil be assigned an individual schedule for clinical training, that can be located to a ward and on psychiatric out-patient services. Time will be allocated for literature studies.

Teaching methods

Primarily clinical rotation, with personal supervision. Depending on student's experience and knowledge the student will be able to take active part in the clinical work. Student must use a log book with reflection as well as to search and evaluate relevant scientific as part of evidence-based medicine.

Teaching will be performed in English. Teaching in evenings and at night may occur. Students are scheduled 40 hours' per week, during which time is allocated for literature studies.

Examination

Compulsory elements:
Clinical rotation
Formative assessment of log book by the supervisor every week.

Examination:
Examination in the form of written case report or literature review shall be presented five days before the end of the course.

All absence should report to supervisor. The course coordinator decides if, and how, absence from compulsory parts can be compensated. Until the student has participated in the compulsory parts (or compensated any absence with assigned tasks in accordance with instructions from the course director) the final study results can not be reported.

Absence from a mandatory education element could mean that the student can not do the part until the next time the course is offered.

If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus's regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the course etc. Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.

Limitation of number of tests or practical training sessions
Student who do not pass the regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination at five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Regarding clinical rotations, the student has the right to attend these two (2) times.

Termination of clinical rotation
The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk.
If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity.

In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course.

If a course has been cancelled or undergone major changes, at least two additional examinations (excluding regular examinations) on the previous contents will be provided within a year of the date of the change.
