To become a dentist 4, 3 credits

For admission to the course, a pass grade in Clinical Odontology 3  is required.

Students who faila clinical placement (or equivalent) as a result of demonstrating such a serious lack of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or the patients’ confidence in medical care is at risk, will only be qualified for a new clinical placement once the individual action plan has been carried out.
 

The course consists of 3 parts

Part 1
Community dentistry I 1 HE credit
On completion of the course, the student should be able to

• account for how dental care in Sweden is legally regulated, organised and financed
• identify similarities and differences between dental care nationally and internationally, from an organisational and epidemiological point of view
• explain and evaluate how organised dental care can prevent disease through strategic actions towards groups of individuals rather than towards the individual

Part 2
Community dentistry II, 1.3hp. On completion of the course, the student should be able to

• describe and use, and evaluate methods to evaluate and safeguard the quality of his/her future dental activity
• show insight into how to, in dental care, promote sustainable development and to reflect on and account for, global aspects of sustainable development.
• understand and analyse principles of population directed dental care and care prioritising
• explain and evaluate the theoretical basis for a change of attitudes via knowledge dissemination
• account for, explain and practise legal dentistry principles in the daily dental activity.

Part 3
Teamwork II 0.7 HE credits.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to

• cooperate with a dental technician student about a casted design of a common patient
• understand and explain the work of the dental technician work in the production of the casted design
• cooperate with a dental hygienist student about a common patient with periodontal disease
• understand that good communication in the interprofessional cooperation with a dental technician and a dental hygienist, is a prerequisite for a successful result.

Part 1 and 2
Lectures, seminars, group assignments and case discussions. Study visits are implemented during the semester after individual agreement with the responsible dentist.

Seminars, group assignments/reports and study visits are mandatory.

Part 3
Clinical training in therapy planning and joint care and treatment of patients.

The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Part 1 and 2
Written examination.
Seminar with oral and written presentation.

Part 3
Presentation of the treatment procedure and its results, written and in the form of seminars.

For both parts the following applies:
To pass the course, attendance at compulsory parts is required.

Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions
If the student fails, 2 more opportunities will be provided, primarily with a renewed written assignment. After that, the student is recommended to retake the course, and be given 3 more examinations. If the student has not passed after 6 trials, he/she has no more admission to the course. (HF chapter 6, section 11 a).

The student should be allowed to undergo clinical placement/clinical parts twice. If a student is not likely to pass, support measures should be offered to avoid that the student being forced to discontinue their education (Guidelines for Examination No. 5331/10-300).

The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course.

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/close-down.

The course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
