Specific entry requirements

For admission to the course, a pass grade in Clinical Odontology 3 is required.

Students who fail a clinical placement (or equivalent) as a result of demonstrating such a serious lack of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or the patients’ confidence in medical care is at risk, will only be qualified for a new clinical placement once the individual action plan has been carried out.
 

Objectives

The course consists of 3 modules. 

Module 1
Community dentistry 1, 0.8 credits
On completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • account for how dental care in Sweden is legally regulated, organised and financed
  • identify similarities and differences between dental care nationally and internationally, from an organisational and epidemiological point of view
  • explain and evaluate how organised dental care can prevent disease through strategic actions towards groups of individuals rather than towards the individual

Module 2
Community dentistry 2, 1.5 credits.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • describe and use, and evaluate methods to evaluate and safeguard the quality of his/her future dental activity
  • show insight into how to, in dental care, promote sustainable development and to reflect on and account for, global aspects of sustainable development.
  • understand and analyse principles of population directed dental care and care prioritising
  • explain and evaluate the theoretical basis for a change of attitudes via knowledge dissemination
  • account for, explain and practise legal dentistry principles in the daily dental activity.

Module 3
Teamwork 2 0.7 credits.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • cooperate with a dental hygienist student about a common patient with periodontal disease
  • demonstrate knowledge of the importance of good communication in the interprofessional cooperation with a dental hygienist, for a successful result.

Content

Community dentistry 1, 0.8 hp In this part, based on the current regulations of the dental care, practical applications in the clinical situation are discussed. Epidemiological concepts, important to the dental care, will are defined and set in relation to the dental care work at individual and group levels. Community dentistry 2, 1.5 hp Lectures and exercises in evaluation and quality assurance of dental care activity. Continued discussion of health and dental care work at individual and group levels including methods for attitude changes. The dental care role in connection with patients' abuse (tobacco, alcohol, narcotics) will be dealt with in connection with the lectures. A section in the course is about legal dentistry and dental care certificates in various situations. The environmental impact of dental care locally, nationally and globally. Teamwork 2, 0.7 hp This part comprises clinical collaborative projects between dental students and dental hygienist students who jointly carry out different dental care moments on common patients. Emphasis is placed on the communicative cooperation aspects.

Teaching methods

Module 1 and 2
Lectures, seminars, group assignments and case discussions.

Seminars, group assignments and reports are mandatory.

Module 3
Clinical training in therapy planning and joint care and treatment of patients.

The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

 

Examination

Module 1 and 2
Seminar with oral and written presentation.

Module 3
Presentation of the treatment procedure and its results, written and in the form of seminars.

For all modules the following applies:
To pass the course, attendance at compulsory parts is required.

Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions
If the student does not pass the examination, the student gets 2 more attempts. After that, the student is recommended to retake the course, and be given 3 more examinations. If the student has not passed after 6 trials, he/she has no more admission to the course.

The student should be allowed to undergo clinical placement/clinical parts twice. If a student is not likely to pass, support measures should be offered to avoid that the student being forced to discontinue their education (Guidelines for Examination No. 5331/10-300).

The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course.

 

Transitional provisions

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/close-down.

The course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
