For students attending the Master's Programme in Biostatistics and Data Science Programme Outline
The programme offers a unique combination of biostatistics and data science. Students with backgrounds in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related disciplines, are provided with the skills to solve problems in biology, medicine, and public health. The programme is offered jointly by Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University.
Programme overview
The programme consists of four semesters. The first three semesters are divided into two blocks of approximately ten weeks each and the final semester is the degree project. Students study two courses simultaneously. For example, in the first semester students commence by studying “Probability theory” and “Theory of statistical inference”; during the second half of the first semester, students study “Biostatistics I” and “Categorical data analysis”.
The courses shown in light blue are held at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the courses shown in Navy are held at Stockholm University, and the courses shown in plum are held at Karolinska Institutet. Following is a list of courses with links to the respective course web pages.

What degrees are awarded?
The master's programme in Biostatistics and Data Science leads to a joint degree between Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University. Degrees are awarded by all three universities, with the following titles in English and Swedish.
Karolinska Institutet:
Degree of Master of Medical Science with a major in Biostatistics and Data Science
Medicine masterexamen med huvudområdet biostatistik och datavetenskap
KTH Royal Institute of Technology:
Degree of Master of Science with a major in Biostatistics and Data Science
Teknologie masterexamen inom huvudområdet biostatistik och datavetenskap
Stockholm University:
Degree of Master of Science, Main field of Study: Biostatistics and Data Science
Filosofie masterexamen Huvudområdet: Biostatistik och datavetenskap.
The titles of the degrees differ between the three universities, since each awards a degree with English and Swedish titles consistent with their internal regulations.
Degree certificate
A student who fulfills the requirement for the degree shall, upon request, receive a degree certificate. The degree certificate will contain the logos of all three universities and details of the degrees awarded.
Stockholm University has been assigned the task of issuing degree certificates, on behalf of and in collaboration with all three universities, for the master's programme in Biostatistics and Data Science. A degree certificate can be requested from the (degree office at Stockholm University) [https://www.su.se/english/education/degrees/application-for-a-degree-ce…]. There is no cost associated with obtaining the degree certificate.
How do I cite the degrees on my CV?
Students receive degrees from three universities, as described above. An example of a possible citation is as follows:
Master of Science with a Major in Biostatistics and Data Science (120 credits). August 2024-May 2026. Joint degree between Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University with degrees awarded by all three universities.
