Master's Courses in Dementia Care for Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists, 2027

This unique programme, offered in cooperation with Stiftelsen Silviahemmet, awards participants the title of Silviaarbetsterapeut (Silvia Occupational Therapist) or Silviafysioterapeut (Silvia Physiotherapist). Graduates receive a diploma and an official pin presented by H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden at a ceremony. 

The purpose 

Dementia is a major cause of disability and dependency, with physical, psychological, social, and economic impacts on patients, caregivers, families, and society.

Participants will develop competencies to implement modern dementia care strategies and provide effective, evidence-based care.

The course package is given in English and is tailored to suit both occupational therapists and physiotherapists. Some of the offered courses are more specific and may be part of a specialist track, while other courses are more generic. The education will lead to a master’s degree in occupational therapy or physiotherapy, with a specialisation in dementia.

Duration

The studies are entirely web-based. The education extends over two years as part-time studies and is equal to a one-year master’s degree programme.

The planned start date for the next cohort is autumn 2027.

Online learning

Karolinska Institutet and Stiftelsen Silviahemmet joint Master’s Courses in Dementia Care are based on research and best practices.

This online learning focuses on interactive, student-centred learning. Short lectures and seminars are broadcasted via our learning platform. The lectures are supplemented with individual studies and assignments. The majority of the literature and lectures will be available via the learning platform.

The learning activities will be closely related to the participants’ profession, thus enabling them to use the results in their everyday work.

Target group

Occupational therapists and physiotherapists who want to develop their knowledge and skills in the field of dementia.

Entry requirements

In order to meet the entry requirements, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or a professional degree equivalent to a Swedish bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits in occupational therapy or physiotherapy. The degree must be from an internationally recognised university. The language of instruction is English, and applicants are therefore required to have a good proficiency in English.

Contract education

The master's courses are offered as contract education in accordance with Swedish regulations (SFS 2002:760). It can only be commissioned by a legal entity such as an organisation or company.
