For students attending the Master's Programme in Biomedicine Study information, regulations and student guide

Here you find current information and regulations during your two years of studies.

Language of instruction

All instruction and exams are given in English.

Entry requirements to a higher semester

For entry to semester 3, a pass must be obtained for all courses in semester 1 as well as Bioethics and Laboratory Animal Science and Applied Biomedical Communication and Professional Development and registration for the course Frontiers in Biomedicine: Research Project 1 in semester 2.

In addition, there may be course-specific previous knowledge requirements (see the relevant course syllabus).

Specific entry requirements for the Degree project in semester 4. At least grade G for all courses in semesters 1 and 2 and registration for the course Research project, 15 credits, or an equivalent course within exchange studies.

Interruption during semester 1

An interruption of studies during the first semester will be granted only if it is attributable to an acute prolonged illness or other important reasons arising after you have been admitted to the programme. No other reason will be accepted.

Examinations and re-examinations

If you take an exam twice and fail, you must contact a study counsellor. If you fail on four occasions, you should apply to the Student Welfare Committee to be allowed to repeat the course, in which case you will be allowed to retake the exam two more times. Failure will then lead to you forfeiting your place. Each time you take the same exam will count as one of the six occasions above. Handing in a blank paper is counted as taking  the exam. An exam for which you have enrolled, but do not attend does not count as taking the exam.

Compulsory attendance at roll-call

Students must take steps to find out when and where the roll-call for their course is due to take place. A student who is absent without having first requested and been granted an exemption will forfeit his or her place on the course. An exemption can be granted by the person responsible for the course.
Following roll-call, students are  registered in Ladok. The registration is transferred directly to the Swedish Board for Study Support (CSN). Do not forget to contact a study counsellor to request a leave of absence. Note that special rules apply if you request a leave of absence during the first semester.
Student buddies taking part in introduction of new students are automatically exempted from roll-calls and from the teaching. These students are entitled to retake any compulsory teaching components missed during the introduction weeks.

Student rights and responsabilities

Student rights and responsibilities in a nutshell - a one page document summarising important aspects of your studies at KI.

Here you can read more about what rights and obligations you have as a student. You can for example find information on admission, examination, exam writing and equality.

PARASOLL - psychosocial health in students at KI

PARASOLL is a project directed at all students at KI to promote psychosocial health. The project has been initiated by the committee for higher education and is a collaboration between several departments.

Accreditation of previous studies

If you have completed and passed certain undergraduate university studies, you may be given credits for them. You are also entitled to credits for other studies if the nature and extent of the knowledge and skills for which you are claiming credits are such that they are equivalent  to the education for which they are intended to be credited. You may also receive credits for knowledge and skills that you have acquired in the course of employment. An application for transfer of credits should be submitted as soon as you have been admitted to the programme. Contact the programme administrator if you have questions regarding accreditation: markus.jonegard@ki.se

Accreditation is reviewed by the examiner where one whole course or components of a course are involved.

Accreditation is reviewed by a programme director for major parts of the programme in connection with admission to a later part or in the case of studies abroad where several courses are involved and also in connection with accreditation of a course as an optional course.

Student's Guide

On the KI web pages for current students you can find all the information you might need as a student at Karolinska Institutet that is not specific to your study programme.

In these programme web pages you find programme specific information ie programme outline, requirements and contact information.

In Canvas (the KI main learning platform) you find the course pages for each specific course. The landing pages for the course is open but to access the material for the course you need to be registered for the course. Normally you can register to a course a week prior to the start of the course.

If you have questions regarding exams, accreditation, admission requirements or international student exchange you will find some information under Regulations and guidelines on this website or you can contact the study counsellor: malin.sandell@ki.se

Register for courses in the Ladok-system. As a student, you have access to a student interface in Ladok where you can get an overview of your studies and do certain tasks on your own. Login to the student interface with your student account
on this website: https://www.student.ladok.se/

Contact information to the Programme Committee for the Biomedical Programmes and Administration is available under contact information.

Elective tracks - Term 3

The second year includes 6 credits of elective tracks of biomedicine subjects in semster 3. The tracks are built up by separate courses.
