International Conference on Good Psychiatric Management for Personality Disorders

Welcome to the second International Conference on Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) for Personality Disorders, taking place May 4–5, 2026, at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. This event brings together experts, trainers, and clinicians from around the world who are interested in an empirically validated treatment approach to borderline personality disorder (BPD).

About GPM for Personality Disorders

GPM is a generalist approach to managing a prevalent, disabling, and sometimes fatal—but treatable—diagnosis. It is designed to be "good enough" for most clinicians and most patients. The model offers guidelines that help mental health professionals become more confident and effective in treating individuals with BPD and other personality disorders.

The approach emphasizes practicality, good sense, and flexibility. Strategies include listening, validation, judicious self-disclosure, and encouraging patients to build a meaningful life rather than focusing solely on their identity as patients. This fosters a positive relationship where both the mental health professional's concerns and limitations are explicit.

GPM is now used in many countries, primarily for adults and young adults with personality disorders. There are applications for patients with co-morbid substance use disorders and PTSD. There are also examples of GPM used outside of psychiatric settings.

About the conference

During the two-day conference on May 4th and 5th 2026, participants will attend lectures, talks, and discussions led by experts in their respective fields. The conference will include presentations of research in GPM and associated generalist treatments as well as workshops on implementations of GPM in different contexts.

The conference is a collaboration between Dr. Lois Choi-Kain of the Gunderson Personality Disorders Institute, Karolinska Institutet (Department of Clinical Neuroscience), and Psykiatri Sydväst, Stockholm.

Example topics include:

  • GPM for complex care of patients with multiple disorders
  • GPM as a primary care approach for patients with BPD
