How to pay your tuition fee

Find out how to pay your tuition fee and what payment options you have in our checklist.

If you are required to pay tuition fees you will have to pay the first installment before the start of each semester. If you are starting your first semester at KI we recommend you pay the first instalment as soon as you can as this is a requirement to get started with your residence permit application.

1. Check your inbox for an invoice from KI

You will receive an e-mail from Karolinska Institutet (no-reply@ladok.se) with your invoice before the start of each semester.

2. Choose payment method

The fastest and most convenient way of paying your tuition fee is through your bank/credit card. Before making the payment, adjust the payment limit on your bank card to cover the transaction. Alternatively, you can ask for several payment links.

State your name in the reference name box.

If you choose this payment method, send an e-mail to tuitionfees@ki.se to request an online payment link and follow the instructions in the payment link.

Bank transfers take longer time to process than online payments. Use the bank account number and details listed in your payment request. State your reference number and state your own name in the transfer message.

If the bank transfer is made by a sponsor/scholarship/parent, they must state your reference number and your name in the message field, so we can confirm who the payment is for.

3. Pay the first instalment before the deadline

You are required to pay the tuition fee in instalments before the start of each semester. The instalment varies depending on the tuition fee of your programme.

  • Autumn semester: 20 May
  • Spring semester: 10 December

4. Download your confirmation of payment and FAS+ insurance certificate

A confirmation of your tuition fee payment will be available in your Ladok for Students account after the payment has been manually registered by the Tuition fee team. When your payment is registered you will also be able to access your FAS+ insurance certificate in Ladok. Most payments are registered within a week.

If you are paying your first instalment, download your confirmation of payment and FAS+ insurance certificate. You will need them for your residence permit application

You need to submit a written application to ask for an extension. The Tuition fee team will review your request and decide if it is possible to extend your payment deadline and how long the extension will be.

The Tuition fee team can only extend a payment deadline due to special circumstances. Extending a deadline after the start of the semester is not possible.

You send your written request to tuitionfees@ki.se

If you are a citizen outside of the EU/EEA/Switzerland, you are most likely required to pay tuition fees. There are some exceptions to this general rule. You can find the full list of exemptions on the Swedish Council of Higher Education’s website.

If you fall under one of the exemption categories, you must document your tuition fee status in order to be exempted from paying tuition fees. The KI Tuition Fee Team will decide if you meet the criteria to be exempted from paying your tuition fee.

Send your documentation to tuitionfees@ki.se
