Disasters - cause damage, suffering, death and leave people in need of humanitarian assistance. This course aims to give an overall understanding of global health and how disasters and health crises affect public health, as well as insights into international response mechanisms with a focus on international humanitarian response.

A very warm welcome to the course Global health, disasters and health crises, 3 credits.

The basis of the course is the global health situation and determinants for health. It illustrates how context and different types of disasters affects public health. In addition, the course aims to give insight into how international health response can be planned and organized, with a focus on international humanitarian response.  

The course focus on trends in Global Health: variations, and determinants of health, with critical attention to the impacts of climate change, disasters and conflicts. It involves analyzing disrupted health systems and applying epidemiological principles to crises and needsassessments. In addition it focus on International humanitarian assistance focuses on principles, rules, standards, for international humanitarian assistance and mandats of and coordination among key actors. It also encompasses simulations and exercises for mass casualty scenarios.

The course comprises a total of two weeks (estimated to 3 credits), of combined campus and web based learning. 

The date for the course start is 16 January 2025. 20 January will be the first day at campus at Widerströmska huset is located at the end of the Karolinska Institutet Campus area next to the junction between Solnavägen and Tomtebodavägen.
